Tabac Thursday's ShaveCold Water Rinse Tabac Jayaruh #343 Synthetic Ever-Ready 1909 Vintage Gem Cutlery SE CWR Tabac AS My prep was just a cold water rinse. The Tabac Shave Soap face lathered well with Jayaruh #343 Synthetic brush. I did two passes with the Ever-Ready 1909 razor with a Vintage Gem Cutlery SE blade and ended up with a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Tabac AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

It is a Van der Hagen Badger brush. Is that a scratchy brush? Very slightly, but it is not fully broke in as I prefer my boar brushes

If you are looking at not scratchy straight out of the box, then a synthetic (I have 2, a jayaruh and a satin tip). I have 2 burma shave boar that are fully broke in and they are not scratchy at all. I also have a generic boar brush that I use the most...it is very scratchy, but I like it a lot.

Will a boar brush get softer and not scratchy with use?

And I have used only one brush at it is still scratchy and hurts my skin if i brush really hard so I have been painting the lather on my face instead.

I own several boar brushes and, while it is true that the tips get softer once broken in, I must admit I never found one that was too scratchy out of the box. On the other hand, some lower grade badgers or horse hair brushes I owned in the past were way too scratchy for my skin (I always face lather). Given your experience so far, I definitely suggest you opt for a synth JR...good backbone but with very soft tips.
