Wasn’t sure if this should go here or in the new SE forum. Flipped a coin and put it here.
I was reading the thread by Linux about the new SE razor from RazoRock and it got me to thinking about all the new SE razors which are in current production. Many, many moons ago when I started acquiring vintage razors there was nothing in current production for SEs. Heck, there was only one company still making unmentionables, and we all know who that was. There were a few folks out there that were acquiring vintage shave equipment for collectable reasons but I think a lot of us got started because we did not want to use unmentionables (O.S. was here) As our equipment wore out our only option was to obtain a used vintage SE. I guess there just wasn’t enough of an SE user base back then to support the R&D and manufacturing costs required to produce new SEs. But slowly SEs made a comeback through small manufacturers. Now, they seem to be falling out of the sky! If you had told me back in 2001 that there would come a time when they would again be producing new SEs I would have suggested you were dreaming in Technicolor. True, they don’t all take GEM blades but it looks like they may be getting there. I'm still waiting for whoever now owns GEM to start reproducing the MICROMATIC. I'm also waiting for the triumphant arrival of the HMS Titanic in New York harbor.

That post right there is why you sir are a member of the Toady ( except for the other unmentionables that I edited out). Class act of a post!

I just can not get on the new SE wagon. Maybe one day that will change. I am just stuck in vintage gear I guess. Alan let me know if you want to try a Starling. We have one on a pass around.

My only new SE is the Razorock Hawk V2 which I really like. It kind of gets a pass in my opinion as the AC blades really came along later in the game and (correct me if I'm wrong - wait this is the internet, goes with out saying ) they were originally for unmentionables. It was later that someone thought to build an SE razor and make use of the blade. I can navigate that width, but think the width of the Gem or Injector is a little easier to navigate. I sometimes want the Blackland Sabre www.blacklandrazors.com/sabre but what keeps me from pulling the trigger is the fact that it's most likely not going to shave any better than the vintage razors and some of them, especially the Damaskeene are friggin' works of art Is there a sign up for the Starling pass around? The starling is aluminum with a green and purple plate, correct?

Why buy new ones-there's nothing wrong with the old ones. I don't need several blade choices either. The prices of new models could get you a collection of vintage razors to be proud of!! I'll stick with the tried and true. I've used them for 20 years and can't wear them out. I often wonder how many owners some of my razors have had over the years.

I'm a vintage guy,... razors, guns, cars, hand tools, whatever,... the good stuff was made before I was. New stuff is about as interesting as cleaning a toilet

I agree with the OP, and I probably should support the new manufacturers, but I like the price of the vintage razors and they work. So I have no newly made SE razors.

Thanks for the offer Fuzzy but I think I'll pass on the Starling pass-around. There's nothing wrong with a person using the new stuff if it works for them. Many of them are very high quality and nicely designed. Like you, however, I am sticking to the old. I'll never give up my MicroMatics. They are truly an engineering work of art. Just my opinion.

I too often wonder who owned the razor before me. Back in the day most men could be assured of getting a new razor as a holiday gift from someone in his immediate family. A lot of the razors we now have stewardship over were bought with love as a gift for a spouse. Then many were passed down to the children. There's more than just good shaves in the history of these old razors.

There is something about doing things the old way, back before they were made without any "feeling"

Yep, I've seen pictures of your razors and it looked like you had the razors you use in your normal rotation with a spare of each. Pretty much what I'm down to now, however I PIFed away the spares. Wish I hadn't, now I need to get new spares.

Almost akin to a 3 on the tree, or when Craftsman was actually "made in America"
