I saw this boast in the instruction booklet that @vintagelife showed on a resent video. It boasts 500 shaves from 12 blades. I Googled it and found this advertisement in The American Magazine of March 1913. I copied and pasted it until I got the whole thing. You can see the highlighted words that were in the search. The boast averages out to about 42 shaves per blade using the strop. Click on the attachment to open in another window then again to imbiggenate the picture.

Id like to see someone try that to see if it works.

This may be true. The blades were made of carbon steel. They could be ruled. It's like a razor. Unfortunately, I do not have good blades for this razor. So for the sake of interest, I would check it out.

The wooden man is creepy. I guess he'd fetch a few dollars on eBay these days.
500 shaves from 12 blades... let's see. That's about 42 shaves per blade. With stropping... why not?

Creepy wooden man would be quite the find if any still exist. I have some NOS Valet Autostrop blades, I'll give the 500 shave challenge a try as soon as I get around to it. Well maybe I should start with 1 since I've been thinking about trying a vintage blade for some time now and haven't gotten around to it.

I won't mention what kind of blade it is except to say it is a stainless blade. I cleaned and palm stropped it after each shave. You just get tired of shaving with the same razor and blade after a while. I can see it happening. It is six weeks worth of shaves and then change blades. I could see trying it out for one blade to see how far you could take it. We should have an AutoStrop blade challenge.

I do not have a strop, however I believe I have a time period correct blade. Let me check, and if I do, I'll figure it out to see if I can do it as well.

You're talking about the Personna 74, the titanium coated tungsten steel blade that was just too good. They made those for injectors too.

So modern SE blades wont fit in an auto strop? Yes, you have to despine them, and then cut the edges just a bit. I believe wchnu has a video on his YouTube channel about it.

So modern SE blades wont fit in an auto strop? Valet Autostrop VB2, VC2, VC3 & VC4 models require blades with cutouts. A1, A2, B1, B2, VB1, VC1 models can use despined modified GEM SE style blades.

Just thinking: do all Valets have blade stops? If so, what would stop me from taking my Dremel to those pesky pins and use a GEM in all of them?

The main condition for a long shave is that the blades are vintage. Modern blades won't shave long
