So modern SE blades wont fit in an auto strop? Some do, but that wouldn't be a true test of the 500 shaves. It would have to be original stock to test the actual metal.

I put a Valet blade in my B1 today. I did two passes, but it was not much better than when I started. I finished off with my ER 1912 with a Gem Blue Star blade. I will try another Valet blade tomorrow. I made a video, and it is uploading to YouTube now.

Just thinking: do all Valets have blade stops? If so, what would stop me from taking my Dremel to those pesky pins and use a GEM in all of them? I think it needs the pins so the blade does not slip back from the stops. Don't quote me on that though.

You don't want to mess with the pins, they hold the blade straight in the carrier. Besides grinding the pins down would destroy any future value the razor has. Also the blade stops on the newer Valet Autostrops are very tiny unlike the older models.

It was merely an idea that popped into my head and I asked the question rather than taking out my Autostrops and check for myself. I will refrain from attempting it. Pity though, as not being able to use decent blades stops me from using them. It's been almost three years. My Valets have very little future value. I don't think I paid more than $10 for any of them.

You can't get 42 shaves out of one of those blades, I can't seem to get past 2 Weird for a stainless blade. So do have any of the older Autostrops? They rock with a modern GEM blade.

My three Valets all need Feather blades. You get two shaves out of them? I don't. They start tugging before the end of the first shave. I look at my Valets and think... Valet or Hussy? Valet or Bunny? Valet or 1912? Valet or Micromatic? Guess what? Life's too short for Valets.

Gonna try this again I think. My thing is what is the base criteria as far as passes go? I feel like back then more ppl did a wtg one pass and called it a day.

One pass was my thing before I went to a beard back in the 80s. I didn't do 2-3 pass shaves until 2011 when I discovered the wet shaving community online.

I do a hybrid wtg/xtg followed by an atg usually but I think for this I’m gonna do a wtg with touchup where needed. Did the first shave today after a 30 round on the strop. Smooth and comfortable. I raised the question of passes bc I recall an ad saying “96 seconds from face to towel”; while it’s not impossible to do a shave of more than wtg in the time it seems more likely to be just a one pass shave referenced 🙂
