On this day in 1967, I traveled to Houston, Texas, and took the oath to defend the USA. I was 127 pounds; two pounds over the minimum for my height. I had enlisted for a three year stent in the US Army. Twenty-one months later, I was on a plane for Vietnam. jayaruh.blogspot.com/p/jayaruh-goes-to-vietnam.htmlI am happy to have served, and I wanted to thank all you guys/gals who either served or are serving in the armed forces. jayaruh.blogspot.com/p/fort-polk-basic.html

Thanks Jim, and thank you for your service. You too Poppi.
I'm glad I got out after my 3 years but I don't look on those 3 years as being wasted. I learned alot and frankly I wasn't harmed by it at all, just the opposite in fact.

Did 3 1/2 years in the United States Marine Corps. I was a 0311. In layman's terms, that is basic infantry, or ground pounder, or grunt, or bullet catcher.... Tore up my knees, my back, my pelvis twisted, but I wouldn't change a thing. I'm happy to have served. Grandpa, was combat wounded on Iwo Jima, so there is a bit if history in our family. One day I will tell some funny stories, if there is any interest.

Marine vet with two tours in Vietnam, I would do it all over again if I relived the past.

Dittos Rob.
OS, of course there's an interest! Always for stories of the service, funny or those requiring support.

It doesn't matter which Country: people serving in the army will always have my unconditional respect. Thanks jayaruh for sharing your story, it was a pleasure reading it.

Im glad you weren't crawling around those jungles or in the tunnels. Ive known a few of those guys and they are all pretty messed up. You did good work over there and have much to be proud of. Much better to be saving lives than taking them.

Thanks. I joined in order to have some control on what I would be doing. I really did not want to be on the breaking/killing side of the army. I still wanted to serve my country. I still did the basic training and basic combat medic training before I did my surgical tech training. Everyone served in their own way. I salute them all.

That's why I volunteered also Jim, for some control. Of course we remember, but many others won't, being too young. Back then there was a lottery for the draft and they'd pick birth dates. If yours was picked and put in a certain place on the list you could pretty much tell if you were going to get drafted or not. I didn't leave it to chance because I didn't want my life to be upset. OK, I really wasn't ready to enter life outside of school either and college didn't interest me. Enter the service.
But back to control... It allowed me to guide my service future so that I even got to pick where I wanted to serve. I decided West Germany needed me more than SE Asia.
