A Burham 1909 SE razor. I hope modern blades (GEM or FHS) will work when it arrives. Yep, they will (GEM's for sure). I've got that one and the open comb version. Admittedly, I haven't tried my closed comb version yet -- I've been meaning to, but it keeps getting preempted with new stuff -- but here's the skinny on the OC version and using both spined and de-spined GEM blades ( CLICK HERE). With the Open Comb you get a fair amount of blade feel with the spine left on (and I'm okay with that), but with the spine off, it was really too mild for my taste. I suspect it's somewhere in between, and knowing you, you'll find a way to engineer a way to get to that sweet spot

I suspect it's somewhere in between, and knowing you, you'll find a way to engineer a way to get to that sweet spot The Burham arrived yesterday and I had a shave with it today. Luckily it came with one original blade for size comparisons (using a 4800dpi flatbed scanner). The original blade is 38.72mm wide, a GEM blade 38.86mm. That's so close that we don't have to worry. The original blade is 18.97mm deep. Noted. A despined GEM blade is 17.32mm deep. We're missing 1.65mm of blade expose. That's not going to work unless we move the blade forwards a bit by dead reckoning (or by using an adapter) A GEM blade with spine is 19.62mm deep. That's an extra 0.65mm of blade exposure we get by using a GEM with spine. That's quite a lot. Not enough to be scary though. So I went for a GEM with spine. Not a brand new one, 6 previous shaves means it is in its prime. You do get quite a bit of blade-feel indeed. Easy does it. I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner. The Burham is a good little shaver though. Quite nimble and light. I like that. I would be very easy to have an adapter 3D-printed to make a despined GEM blade exactly the right depth. But I don't think I'll bother - the Burham needs a GEM with spine and some very gentle technique. Recommended.

Sir, I could not agree with you more -- I appreciate you detailing the measurements, which are completely inline with my experience. I'm going to tag this thread in the Burham thread for those who may look for it there. I really like both the Burhams (Open and Closed Combs) -- there is a efficient-simplicity that speaks to me. And my shaves (with the spine on) have been great.

Today’s find. An Enders Speed Shaver. Never used with all the blades and cardboard blade blank. $8 at the swapmeet. She had a bunch of casket cased Autostrops too.

You did not overpay Blades alone were worth it to me. She collected SE razors for years and is selling them off. I bought 6 cased razors from her 6 months ago. One was that last OC Dammy I gave away. I talked to her some and she will look if she has any loose razors laying around. I will have to go back next time and see. She had a nice chrome cased ER 1924 that I might get next time. I was really cash poor this month.
