I have a young neighbor been in the hood for about a year now. He is fascinated with my shaving items----he uses the carts that most young men swear by(instead of at!!). For the past two months, he has been using a vintage unmentionable (OS was here)I loaned him along with several different blades, a boar brush, lather bowl and four easy lather soaps. He now can shave without the use of band-aids or emergency medical service! He wants to try SE shaving now, so I loaned him a 1912 and blades and walked him through the importance of angle and pressure. Five days in, his severe razor burn of the first day has subsided, I think he will make it. He wants to try Williams now, so I gave him a puck told how to lather it. An hour later he came over with a bowl of soupy bubbles!! I broke out a brush and made him a bowl of lather which he hurried home to shave with. Half an hour later he brought the bowl back with lots of usable lather left over, said he really liked how slick the lather was and tried to duplicate my technique without success. I explained my use of Williams for over 50 years and he promised me he would stick with it and practice, practice!! He's gonna make it---I'm damn proud of this 22 year old!!

I'm sure I speak for most of us, that anything he may need , we would be happy to supply to get him on the right track.

There are several videos around also on Williams. Good work on your part. We need more young people on the path.

At the moment he has more than he needs and I have more than enough to share. I told him to take time and familiarize himself with everything he is trying before expanding his gear. He seems to pick up on things very quickly. I know he will want his own gear sooner or later and by that time maybe he will have developed techniques and skills to build his confidence it SE shaving. I'll keep you posted on his progress!

Very cool story indeed. I think a lot of us would have liked to have a mentor to help us along the path when we first stumbled into wet shaving. To share information about hardware, software and technique. Glad you have been able to spread the word on the greatness that is wet shaving.
I am doing my part to get the word out by loaning out razors, blades, soaps and info. I have four tried and true converts so far (brother, nephew and two coworkers). I have two more currently trying out items, so I hope to have two more slide to the sharp side. Unfortunately all but one have preferred unmentionables, but it is a step in the right direction for sure.
Keep up the good work and happy shaves to all.

I have an update on my young neighbor. His life is about to turn upside down as he has enlisted in the military!! He didn't like college, didn't like his job and thought he needed a change. He has the blessing of his parents on this endeavor. I think he will mature more in the next three years than the 22 leading up to now. He quizzed me about boot camp and training. I said just do as your are told and you will be fine. I told him the worst part is adjusting to the military way of doing things and training time will pass quickly. He thinks his choice of his military occupation will be motor pool/mechanic. Sure beats basic infantry! We discussed his new love for SE shaving. These past few days he has really progressed. It appears SE shaving will have to wait till boot camp is over, but later he will have time to get back to it. He leaves in about two weeks. He wanted to return my gear before he leaves. I told him to leave them with his parents while in boot camp as the military will provide, and everyone will have the same! Once boot camp is over, he can resume a few of his pleasures! I wished him well and we parted with a firm handshake!! He is a fine young man, his parents should be proud.

The military does not provide razors anymore unless that has changed since I went to basic, but of course that was back in '91 and it was Air Force. My nephew went to Marine basic back about 8 years now and he wasn't issued razors and wish he had brought his unmentionable along. Basic training does not lend itself to leisurely shaving and since it sounds like he is still learning his technique, it is probably best he leaves his gear at home. Let's all hope he is still onboard to go back to it after basic. It is good to see the younger generations learning the old ways, the civilized ways.

I wasn't issued a razor either and wish I knew then what I know now. I'd have gotten far fewer ingrowns had I known about SE razors. I don't see why he can't use a SE with canned goop to speed things up once he gets technique down pat. I suggest gel. When I was using goop gel always worked better for me. He'll have time on the weekend for actual shaving technique. I'd put soap and brush on hold.
When I was serving my training was combat engineer, after 6 months at my unit I was the training clerk. One never knows where one will end up.

I pretty much received the same advice from my old man before I went to basic. He said it was all a game and just to keep my head down and follow orders.

They don't let you keep pocket knives and such, so not sure how they would feel about SE blades. Best of luck to him. Serving his country and wet shaving. Both very noble.
