I was really into the "drug store" stuff for awhile. But now a lot of the "drug store" stuff seems a bit over bearing to me lately.
I still like some of the regulars, Skin Bracer, AV, Pinaud (regular), but I'm kind of repelled by some of the others. Not sure if it's just a phase me or my nose is going trough, but it's one reason I've been using some balms as most don't have a strong scent. Though I do have a sample of the Castle Forbes 1445 balm which is scented and that I like.
So several items are semi-retired now and we'll see if they come out of retirement or we'll have the great Stinkfest Pif!

I'm liking the balms, too. But I am rotating through my aftershaves a week at a time.

I have had this happen over the years. So far I always come back around to the classics.

So I'm curious which of the "drug store" aftershaves made your "time-out" list....Skin Bracer, AV and Pinaud are usually the ones that come to my mind for classic drug store scents. Maybe Hai Karate & Drakkar Noir? I should really stay out of this discussion, the "bit over bearing" part has always been my challenge with many of the "traditional" aftershaves. The scents aren't bad at all, they either just keep coming or enter the room before I do -- maybe I put on too much (or perhaps not enough ).

I got tired of matching soaps and AS, now I use classics also. I traded off all my matched AS's(some are too expensive anyway) and never looked back. I like things simple any more, now that I am an old geezer!!

The scents aren't bad at all, they either just keep coming or enter the room before I do -- maybe I put on too much (or perhaps not enough ). So at the moment, on my not so hot list are in no particular order: British Sterling, AV Musk, Pinaud Musk, Pinaud Special Reserve, Avon Spicy, Avon Tai Winds, Old Spice. Adidas Dynamic Pulse, Nivea Deep, though more modern scents have also fallen out of favor. There is something in both of them I just don't like the scent of. The Gillette Cool wave which to me is similar to the Adidas and Nivea is still to my liking, go figure. I'm navigating toward "gentler scents" The Castle Forbes balm is one of my few balms with any real persisting scent. It's strong barbershop when it goes on and I like it. It quickly settles down and is no longer noticeable unless you smell some skin that you put it on. I like my La Toja aftershave and if the Speick AS smells like the stick, that would be one I'd like as well. I guess I'm just getting finicky all of a sudden. (well, maybe not all of a sudden, just now it's extending to my after shaves;) )

I like things simple any more, now that I am an old geezer!! We need an AMEN button! I never understood the matching. To me once you rinse the remnants of lather off your face post shave, there is no scent left. What does one need to be so careful about as far as matching a non existent scent to your A/S. And hell, even if there was a slight scent left from the soap. Slap on some of the Veg. That's like throwing the Joker in 500, it doesn't matter what was led! Actually, speaking of Pinaud, I have three samples on the way - Gentleman's Gin, Classic Vanilla and Bay Rum. I'll bet I come to terms with one or all of them.

As pharmacist I love to try all kind of formulation. Normally I go with European old school barbering method: 1. balm, with a good massage on wet skin 2. AS lotion, to dry the surface and improve the frag
But If I have to use just one, my best choice is a good toner. With no alcohol, with hydrolate base.
