A bit ago we were talking about horse hair brushes. Did anyone get one and try it? I'm curious as to how they compare with a boar. I may be thinking of trying one.

I hated my horsehair. I got the Vie-Long "Zurito" 13061. It was too prickly for me and gave me brush burn so I traded it off within 6-8 weeks of getting it. I'm in no hurry to try another one.

Thanks for the info Brian, maybe I'll try one of those Semogues folks are raving about.

Boars are very nice brushes once broken in.
Alan, how do you lather? If you face lather look for the shorter lofts. The loft specs may not sound much different, but they produce an entirely different brush IMO. There are two grades also, but I don't find them to be different at the tips, even though it's spoken of as 90% tips or 75% tips. I find them different in the hair shaft. I find 90% tips to be more moppy, and 75% tips to have more backbone. Both are just as soft after break in after the tips split. I mean wet and in use, not dry.
Semogue and Omega both make good boars. A good, but not fancy Omega can be had very inexpensively, because the $ is in the knot and not the handle. My Omega 10019 ($8) is every bit as good a brush as my favorite Semogue 1438 ($20+), except it isn't worth reknotting the handle for my heirs. It's a throw away. Omega does make solid handle brushes too, and they're more in line with Semogue prices. I also have a Vulfix 2234, I don't know if they're made anymore, and it too is a nice boar for face lathering. These smaller brushes will still bowl lather, but I would think you'd want a larger brush for that. They make them I just don't know about them. Check the loft specs.
In the winter (dry) I can break in a new boar in about a week lathering 3 times a day. The brush needs to dry between latherings. You'll be able tell when it's broken in, the tips will have split. Now I mostly break boars in for PIFing, but when I was breaking them in for me I'd use them for face lathering and 2 more times during the day I'd hand lather them. Then one day it would dawn on me that the brush was really good. It was broken in.
I have a number of boars in my rotation and I won't be without them. They operate FAR above their pay grade.

I find my horse compares to a badger. Not over stiff not prickly. I got a higher loft vie-long pro. Love the thing. To me it does everything. They are not expensive I say give one a try.

Thanks for all the info guys. I've had numerous Omegas and think they are great, I just wish they had nicer handles. Right now my preference is to the shorter loft boars. I've had the Vulfix # 1,2,3, 5, and 404 Grovesnor. The # 1 and Grovesnor work best for me as I face lather. The 2,3, and 5 are higher lofts. I looked at that SEMO the other day. It's a real beauty, I really like the handle. I ordered a less expensive boar SEMO instead just to see what they are like. I think now I'll try one of the horse hairs just to see also.
Hmmmm....when I started this thread I only was thinking of buying one brush, now I'm buying two. What happened!!
I'll let you folks know what I think when I get them.

I finally got a horse hair. It's a Vie Long Beehive, undyed, 35/65. It definately is one of the best made brushes I've used. It works great with soaps and creams, has plenty of backbone. It would be my go to brush with the exception of one thing; it's too stritchy for me. The first lather pass is fine, however when I relather after the first shave pass it irritates my skin. I wonder if it will soften in time? Right now I stopped using it.

After all this time! To get one and be disappointed. But that's why you bought it right? To find out. How else would you know?
Knowing nothing about them and being as happy as a pig in a wallow, I'll stick to my badgers, boars , and synthetics. That's enough.
Thanks for taking the hit for the team.

Right now it's sitting in a drawer doing nothing. I'll get it off to you this week. If it works for you great, if not you can PIF it.

The Vie-Long Natural Brown Horse Hair brush is scritchy out of the box, they do break-in... slower than Boars. I've had a Natural Brown set @ 46mm, and after a daily bowl lather using a Spice Mortar Bowl for ~4 months, the scritch was greatly diminished and the tips were very soft without loss of backbone.
You might enjoy the New Natural White V-L Horse Hair Brush, it's a 50/50 mix instead of the 35/65 of the Natural Brown. The Mane/Tail ratio; Mane= softness & Tail= Backbone/scritch, less pressure with the brush will also reduce the scritch you feel when lathering.
