Fuzzy,
I had bookmarked her site some time ago and just happened to click on the bookmark yesterday and got the 404 error. So her site is down. I do know that she has had some serious health problems for the last yr or so and has not made soaps in that time period.
Just hope that she is out of the soap business and has not lost her battle with her health problems.
I got a couple of her shave soaps and one cream but really like her bath soaps.

I traded a tub of Mama Bear for her Old Spice version a year or so ago with a member at B&B, it doesn't really smell like Old Spice but it is a fantastic soap. I like it much better than the Mama Bear.

She re-opened her store on the 4th of August. Guessing she's back in business.

You got the 404 error message because I had gal that does my site from added the https to the checkout. So I'm not sure why it did that for a bookmarked page but it does. So just resave the link and it will work. It did it to me as well.
But I'm BACK!!!! and it feels good!!!!

Krissy,
Sooooooooooooooooo glad to see that you have been able to finally get settled after the loss of your mother and your own battle with health problems.
Can't wait until you get your bath soaps up and running again.

I've got several batches of bath soaps made up, just need to get photo's taken for the most part. And several more in the plans of being made.
I've made up a batch of pre-shave soap early this morning. I just pulled it out of the mold. With a second batch planned as well so I have two types to send to testers.

That sounds interesting.

I just pulled them out of the mold a little while ago. Here is a cell phone pict. This one is a palm oil based the next to be made is going to be an olive oil base. By based i mean the base oil used as they are made using the cold process method. The color is natural.

What makes a pre shave soap better then a regular soap for the ritual? I am all ears here.

A pre-shave soap is basically a facial soap. More moisturizing and less cleansing. Granted any soap could be used, but I have used specific ingredients to bring a little extra BANG and a lot of it to this soap. The lather is very creamy rather than bubbly which gives the user a bit more control over where that lather goes.
Hubby has been using another batch that I made the other day. But only one bar survived because it overheated because of the honey that was added. When soap overheats one of the things that can happen is that it separates. I should have known better because it started to gel almost right away after being poured into the mold. So I knew what to do with this batch to prevent that from happened which worked perfectly on this second batch. The first batch that I made was also olive oil based which takes a lot longer to harden. So this batch has palm oil as the base oil, but I believe I will offer both, but the olive oil will need a longer cure time because of that fact. But I wanted it to be mostly vegan with the exception of the honey used as well as the raw silk fibers because there are some who don't want or like tallow in their soaps.
But hubby has been using that one bar for a number of days now and he's noticed how much softer his face is! Which shows that it's doing what I want it to do.
I looked at the ingredients of one of the most popular pre-shave soaps. Musgo Pre-Shave Soap, also known as Glyce because it's also a glycerin based soap that uses sugar (sucrose) alcohol as part of the process to make it.
Ingredients of that soap are........ Sodium Cocoate (Coconut Oil), Sodium Tallowate, Sucrose, Water, Alcohol, Castor Oil, Calcium Carbonate, Lime Oil, Lime Fragrance
I looked at that ingredient list and I know how drying coconut oil is to the skin when it's saponified with sodium hydroxide or lye. So given that it's the first ingredient that is the ingredient that has the most of by weight. Coconut oil is used to not just add to the lather of the soap but also hardness.
Sodium Tallowate is tallow that has been saponified by sodium hydroxide. This like the coconut oil gives the soap hardness. It also gives the soap some degree of cleansing and moisturizing properties as well as adds to the lather.
Sugar, water and alcohol are the next ingredients. They are used in the process of making the soap transparent to some degree in some soaps but also so it can be melted and poured much easier than say a cold process soap without the alcohol added.
Castor oil is another lathering oil but instead of adding hardness to the soap like coconut oil it adds softness so the whole recipe needs to be balanced if a lot is used. But it looks like not much is used in this recipe. But castor oil also adds to the moisturizing properties of the soap. IMHO most soap makers do not use enough castor oil and don't know how to balance recipes to take advantage of this wonderful oil.
Calcium Carbonate is a water softener if I am not mistaken followed by the scent that is added to the soap.
So in a nutshell thats what the ingredient list tells me about this soap.
Now with cold process soap that I make I can control more aspects of the soap. I can not only control the amount of each oil used to get specific properties but I can also control things like the liquids that are used and other additives that are added to bring more benefits into the soap. *grins* Which will remain a secret until I get feedback from my testers which I haven't chosen as of yet. I do want to make up another batch that is slightly different.

I also looked at another popular pre-shave soap, the razo rock pre-shave soap
Ingredients: Water, propylene glycol, sodium palmate, sodium stearate, glycerin, sucrose, sodium coceth sulfate, sodium cocoate, elaesis guinneensis oil, cocos nucifera oil, citrus dulcis oil, fragrance(parfum), tetrasodium etidronate, benzophene-3, bht, limonene, linalool, geraniol.
Just looking at the ingredients tells me that this is also a melt and pour type soap that is popular because propylene glycol as the second ingredient. This is not a natural ingredient and one I do NOT like to see so high on the ingredient list.
This soap is also detergent based unlike other melt and pour soaps that are more natural based such as Mama Bear Shave Soap.
If it was me, and I had a choice between the razo rock one and the musgo one i would choose the musgo or even a mama bear soap melted into a bar just because they are more natural.
I'm not a fan of the detergent based melt and pour soap bases as I have bought some a LONG time ago before I knew there was a difference for my kids to play with and make their own bath time soap creations. Now I buy the more natural ones for them to create their own fun soaps in fun shapes and scents.
I'm not even a big fan of the natural melt and pour soap bases because I think they are more drying to the skin compared to a well balanced cold process soap.
Cold process soap of any type is only as good as the makers understanding of the recipe and the oils used. Because there is a lot of BAD cold process soaps being sold for various reasons which i won't get into here. but if someone wants to know, shoot me a PM.
