I was inspired to restore my case for the Kampfe Bros/Star Razor by Jim over on The Shave Den. He had restored his, and I wanted to do the same for mine. So I probed his mind for some information and jumped in. Here it is before.
The snap is broken. The inside is not too bad, but the hinge is broken, too. Here it is after I finished the restore. I just brush cleaned the velvet inside, removed the paper like coating, sanded, and painted the exterior. I also rebuilt the cloth hinge and affected a repair for the snap. I painted the case inside and out with acrylic black paint. I am very happy with the results.

I have several other Gem cases that could be restored. I feel more confident now. And, since we are to stay at home, it could give me something productive to do.

Did you strip the leather off the case or just paint the exposed wood? I don't think it was leather, but I did remove it all. I think it was some sort of paper that was textured. Over the years the glue that held it on released in spots. I removed all of it on the outside, but left some on the inside of the bottom. I sanded and painted the bare wood.
