Thursday Evening Franken'14 Experiment:
Handle Switch: Knurled round handle attached to early 1920's Touring Deluxe Head.
A quick bit of touch up this evening on my neck for test purposes.
If there was ever a doubt in my mind there isn't now.I greatly prefer the round knurled handle over the smooth hex type. This experiment enabled me to experience the later production '14 Touring Deluxe Head with the more lively knurled round handle.
I could immediately perceive a modest yet noticeable drop off in audio feedback attributable to the Touring Deluxe Head's slightly lower level of aggression. If for fun I took a guess I'd say whatever Touring Deluxe production run this was it is roughly 17 percent less aggressive than my original knurled 1914 yet very effective.
Having placed the proper handles back on the heads my early thoughts are that for my preferences the older more aggressive round handle '14 is the gold standard among the Little Lather Catchers. My guess and it's only a guess from way out in right field is that my particular Touring Deluxe was among those produced during it's earlier years and that over time ER designed them to shave less aggressively.

Could be. My mild '14 was in a '25 touring kit.
This mornings shave:
Van der Willaims Simpson Special best ER '14 GEM SS ptfe (9) Kramperts Finest Acadian Spice Bay Rum
I decided today (?) that I'm going to ride this blade out with the '14. Typically that means 5 more shaves, but what ever I get I get.

RM-how do you lose not one but two nice vintage razors??? These arent Bic disposables you leave in a hotel room....Are they at someones house or somewhere that you maybe able to retrieve them...they arent gone forever are they?? They are both indeed gone for good. Both times I left them in hotels I had stayed in. Both times I contacted the hotel but heard almost the same thing - 'no sir there doesn't seem to be an old razor turned in from your room. Perhaps the maid threw it away?' The second one I brought purposefully to this wonderful old hotel in Vancouver Canada down by the beaches at Stanley Park. It was built and finished in 1914 - so naturally I picked a 1914 razor for shaving there. A great stay - and some great shaves - and *^@^@%&*!! Yup, forgot two. Nope, never getting em back.

RM: Sorry about your misfortune. That sux! As we say "on the job" when we make a mistake and manage to walk away from it uninjured, "I won't be making that same mistake again anytime soon!" Buy another '14 and move on, life's too short.
ER '14 Army Issue Khaki Kit Tep Pella PTFE (4) Semigue (spelling?) Boar Mama Bears Aged Spice Soap Thayer's Super Hazel Glycerine mixed with Old Spice
Great shave this morning! I'm laying the head of the razor much flatter against my skin and it seems to be "the angle" I've been hearing about. Also, I've been leaving the blade in the razor and just rinsing it really good. In the past I'd always remove the blade, rinse it, dry it, and store it separately. I wonder if perhaps I've been dulling the blade a bit by toweling it off etc.?

John I often leave the Stainless Steel PTFE blades in my Streamline for 2 weeks straight (life of blade=14 shaves) without ever removing the blade.I rinse my razor vigorously in scalding hot tap and give a quick wipe with a soft cloth after every shave with no worries about rust or soap buildup.

Friday morning:
Barbershop Pro' shave bar Semogue handle w/ a TGN 20mm Finest Fan knot ER '14 GEM SS ptfe (9) Kramperts Finest Acadian Spice Bay Rum
John I do even less. Since I use SS blades I just rinse (violent agitation) off my razor, assembled, in my soapy basin of water with floating whiskers, shake it off and it's good. Now if you have carbon steel blades more makes really good sense. It's a straight thing after all, right?
On other coated blades I've seen printed on the wrapper, "Do not wipe". So I do that with all my blades (I don't use carbon steel). I always assumed it was about the coating though.

Saturday morning:
VDH Simpson Commodore x1 best ER '14 GEM SS ptfe (10) Kramperts Finest Acadian Spice Bay Rum
I posted too soon, edit:
I like the way this "install a blade and use it in one razor" is working out so much that I think I'm going to do it more often as the bug hits me. One certainly gets to know the razor.
The blade is beginning to age fast now. I hope I get my average of 14 shaves with it.
The new '14 arrives today!

It's here and it's gorgeous. No case, but I didn't need or want one. I'll know in the morning. It's clean, blade installed, and the 11th shave on the blade is waiting for me.

RazorX,
Since the Ted Pella PTFE is all I use, I'm going to start leaving the blade in and using your scalding hot rinse method. Thanks!

1914 Ever-Ready round handle original GEM PTFE SS (7) Williams VDH Boar Krampert's Finest Bay Rum
Sorry gentlemen,my brush & shave soap choices haven't shown much variety. LOL...The bright side is keeping variables to a minimum helps me to compare one razor's performance to another's.
Blade felt full of life on shave #7,the '14 is an incredibly responsive razor, always a pleasure.
John I hope the scalding hot water rinsing works well for you,I either rinse it directly under the faucet or swirling vigorously in a very small plastic container.
The proof's in the shave, really good to hear your new '14 performs as hoped Brian, outstanding that you found a nice one so quickly !
