Neat! Now I have to wonder why it wasn't put into production.
The patent is dated '63. When did Gem stop razor production?

We'll probably never know why it wasn't put into production.I've read the Contour II was made possibly into the 80's, I've seen NIB ones that had a bar code which at least puts them in the late 70's.

Oh, that late! There goes that line of reasoning. Yeah, well never know. It's still an unbelieveably great piece of SE history you uncovered. It should probably be in a museum. Maybe brought to Waits attention? It needs to be in the knowledge bank.

You didn't wait very long to try it out Tom!!! I am turning green over here - but I will get recover - eventually. There was a razor which sold a while ago on eBay and identified as a Gem Adjustable Kit. As it is an old sale there is no picture to view. I couldn't take the suspense and just had to know. (I notice there was also mention of it on one of the 'other' sites. ) I couldn't resist so I contacted the fella - I just had to know if there was another one around. I texted him and included a link to this thread so he could see your razor. This was his response to me: No, your razor is totally different and way later. Mine is a 1901 Gem that uses a hollow ground-wedge style blade like the old kampfe bros razors. I've never seen one like yours before either. It looks to be a model between 1960-1970.I buy old razors and restore them to sell in my store - www.dandysuit.com. check it out if you are into the old style clothing and such.
Thanks,
There ya go - the doubt is erased on that one!!! I guess the 'adjustable' part on that sale referred to the blade depth adjusting screws on the early wedge frame - not a gap adjustable frame. (I left the bit about his website here because I figure he was so considerate in promptly responding that it was the least I could do. It is really a very cool site.) So....... still looking good for a Very Rare stipulation on this razor!! Green I say. Green!!

Wayne, thanks for taking the time to contact him, that was awesome of you! Thing is, this one wasn't listed as an adjustable in either the title or description. I have been trying to find a gold open comb Micromatic that has the two bumps in it and was just looking through the sales when I saw the listing this one was in. It jumped right out because the pictures were very good.
So, I guess it's possible that others may have sold that didn't have the word adjustable in the title, but with as many guys from the various sites constantly scouring the bay it's hard for me to believe too many would have slipped through unnoticed, but then again, this one had been on there for a couple days with no activity.

Ye - I agree that such an item could well be posted without a reference to it being adjustable. But, that one phrase 'Gem 'Adjustable' in the sales description couldn't be ignored. Well, now it can!

Shave two was done this morning with it set at 5 the whole time with the same Treet blade. When I was done I re-lathered a couple places and went over them with it opened up to 9 and heard the unmistakable sound of more whiskers being removed. It's been about 13 hours since I shaved and still no after effects so I declare it a winner.
It's a much better shaver when it's cranked wide open, so it is a definite improvement over the Feather Weight, Push Button and Contour models, at least in my opinion. It's a fun razor to own, easily my greatest find probably for all time, and will definitely get used regularly along with the umpteen gazillion other razors I've accumulated.

RM, I'm not a collector, no, really, I'm not. If I were to ever get my hands on something like that, well, I wouldn't want to. IMO it's priceless.
Tom, does Antiques Roadshow ever show up in your area? I'd love to see you on the tube with that razor.

American pickers contacted my friend that owns an antique store about possibly visiting, but I don't think his place quite qualified for what they look for.

Greetings I'm glad it's good shaver that is a bonus. Even if it was a shaving disaster it would still be the find of a lifetime, as far as any of us know you are the only person who owns one, if at any time in the future another owner turns up the pair of you could form the most exclusive club on the planet! Regards Dick.
