Every now and then I get a hankerin' to try out a scuttle. I have a "gravy warmer" that I've used as a poor man's scuttle and it does keep the lather warmer than just a mug. I'm just not convinced that a true scuttle is worth $45 to $75.
What do you guys think? Anyone love them? Should I save my money?
Thanks!
John

John, I'm with you on the price of a scuttle.
All I want or need is a brush scuttle since I face lather, and I'm hesitant to buy one of those. I've had my eyes open for "parts" for one for some time now. I hit paydirt a few weeks ago.
I found at my local liquor store a small drink shaker. If it was a tumbler it would hold maybe 8 ozs. All I wanted was the SS cup portion. Then a trip to the local Goodwill found a crockery pitcher. Bigger than I wanted, but it doesn't go in the cabinet anyway.
The jury is still deliberating on whether I like it or not, but for under $10 I have a very useable brush scuttle. I suppose I'll know if it was worth doing if I continue using it, so far, when I have a brush large enough for me to dig it out of the cup I use it. Many of my brushes are simply too small for it.
I have found that too warm water in the scuttle kills the lather. It's no big deal, just relather it on the face and as the soap cools off the lather comes back. It doesn't hurt to hydrate the stubble a bit more and I'm in no hurry during my shave.

I just use simple Stainless Steel bowls - one bigger than the other - pop the brush in and it is ideal. As I have dropped each of them a few times, I am glad they are not pricey pottery.
I wouldn't turn one away as a gift though in case you guys....... : )

I like my scuddle. Having said that I do not use it a lot. I have a Dirty Bird 1.5. I need to get a brush scuddle as I face lather soaps. I would say save your pennies and hook one up. It stores well

For me, using a nice deep soup cup works nicely. Its a weekend luxury that is rare, most days are face lather and 2 passes, AS and out the door .

My "scuttle" cost $1 at the thrift store. The inner stoneware bowl fits perfect in the Pate bowl The stoneware works excellent as it really retains the heat...it has kept my lather warm for over an hour!! Cheap and effective

Thanks to all you "scuttlers" for your prompt helpful replies. Very innovative ideas, and I like that. I just doesn't sound much like a "real scuttle" will be that much different from my double chambered gravy boat. After all, they are both designed to keep things warm. Maybe I'll just keep watching the antique thrift stores and go from there.
Great pics, BTW.
RM, good luck with the hint. Let me know how that works out for you! grin.

I love this model: Chalice (Càlice de Barbear). It is a scuttle for FL made by the Brazilian ceramist Débora Costa. Does anyone have experience with this?

It looks just like the crown king scuttle. If you want a review of it, let me know and Ill make a vid. I put hot water in it and cork it, then put more hot water in the bowl to warm and soak the brush. Its a real treat, especially in cold weather. Its not worth even 45 though. 21 dollars was a good price.

Does it warm the lather ... Yes, of course. It's a scuttle, but with a slim shape. The hole helps to warm the lather when It's in hot water. Unfortunately It's just for brazilian domestic market.

I like the pate scuttle, without the pate.
