Anyone else tired of seeing "G-Bar" everywhere? This is my second favorite SE, just behind the OCMM. I know they are on opposite ends of the efficiency spectrum, but the HFT gives me a better shave than its kissing cousin the Feather Weight and even better than the 1912s & Clog Pruf. Besides the shave I think this razor is the sexiest of them all. It's just great to look at & even if it didn't shave well I doubt I'd ever get rid of it.

YES! It's funny that the term "G-Bar" is pretty much accepted as being coined my Michael Ham (I think that's who named it, after typing that I'm not feeling 100%), simply because he didn't know what it was called, and I'm fine with that. Yet, when you try to bring back the real name people freak, I'm not as fine with that.

HFT it is. I will stop using G-bar....Even though there is a g on the handle that lends to that name I had actually not noticed that the HFT does have a thicker heavier head on it. Great to learn new things. Fuzzy

You are correct, Fuzzy. As the story goes, there is a "G" and a safety bar... "G-Bar".

Thing is, the Feather Weight also has a G on the handle but no one calls it a G-bar.

Brings to mind the term "Lather Catcher" which I understand was coined on the boards not from the factory. Then again at least that was coined to cover a type of razor not a Model.

Does anybody have any information on why Heavy Flat Top is thought to be the 'real' name for this Gem??

There were some photos of old in store display signs as well as a shot of sales rack full of the razors on an Ebay auction on another forum several years ago. All the signage called them a "Heavy Flat Top". Sadly, the posting member has since taken the pics off line and last time I checked (which was quite a long time ago) is not active. That's my side of the story anyway.

I have looked through a gazillion old ads and that is one they sure didn't seem to advertise much. Someone posted pictures of a NOS model and in the instructions it used the term Flat Top to describe it, but it didn't have the word Heavy in it. I can't for the life of me remember where the post is.

I agree about the lack of advertisements on this one HT. GEM seems to have advertised tons in the 40's and picked up again with the launch of the Push Button in 58. For most of the 50's though the ads seemed to focus on their blades - with the razors referred to almost as a second thought - just holder for the blades.
It would be nice to nail this one down here at TOST!! If anyone can come up with something that could be posted here to settle this that would be great.

I have an NOS HFT and the instruction sheet refers to it as a Slim-V flat-top. I did a Google search on Slim-V flat-top and came across a ASR advertisement in a Pittsburgh newspaper from the early '50s. The razor that the ad referred to as a Slim-V flat-top was very clearly a Feather Weight. Very confusing. ________ Jeff

But I have seen were things are confusing with the SE razors. Not sure why things are not as uniform as the DE stuff.

It is also possible that since they all work alike the instructions from a slim-v flat top were just used on the heavy Flat top. I am assuming now that the name Feather Weight is a misnomer and Slim-v flat Top is the right name??
