What makes me think it's not a clone... The dead-on cap and other identical features. The sheer magnitude of the task of cloning the micromatic. It's not in the same realm as cloning an old type. It could be done, but if this was a production piece, with the expense involved you would think that more than one would show up.
What makes me think it's not somebody's custom handle job... The head is not from any micromatic that's been seen before. It lacks patent information, and even lacks a name. You couldn't take a micromatic head and make this from it without adding metal to it in the neck area. The bottom of the neck is wider than any others. Yet this wider neck isn't necessary to build one like it. You could take a regular micromatic, saw it off, and make your own handle like this. Because it could be done this way, but wasn't, that also leads me to believe that there weren't micromatics out there yet.

I realize that there is nothing definite about this, and I don't take your questions as insults. They are good questions to raise. I'm just saying "This is what I think it is, and this is why".

I am glad you are not taking my questions as insults - that would be a shame. They are not intended as such. The great thing about these razor forums is the respectful communication that goes on in the pursuit of learning razor history.
You do have a special razor here - no doubt. Your arguments supporting it being a MM prototype are reasonable.
It may just well be that.

I wanted to post a pic of a STAR DE (I know, I know .... bad RM..... but it is disassembled so ). There certainly are differences between the two handles, I see that. But I think importantly, there are strong similarities between the two - the style of handle on the STAR DE (shhhh!) and the adjustable MM posted here. As both the STAR and MM were manufactured by ASR, it seems to me rather supportive of the prototype argument. It might have made sense during development to consider marketing similar styles of razor. This might though, put the time frame after the initial MM and into the 1940's. Just a thought.

I tried, but the blades I picked up were garbage. They were made in Korea. The package says "Select Brand", and tells us to "compare to Treet"... don't.

Thank you for the offer, but I ordered some Gem stainless blades and they arrived today. I tried it out side by side with a regular micromatic, and couldn't tell the difference. It's been far too long since I've had SE blades to shave with. Gave myself several weepers today.

Great that you got to use the razor though.
