I have a Dirty Bird scuttle that I love. I prefer a hot lather shave too. Anyone else like a scuttle? How about a victorian style scuttle to keep the brush warm? I have one of each love them both.

I broke a lovely hand made pottery scuttle a couple of years. Since then I have 'dummy proofed' my set up by utilizing stainless steel bowls. The metal transmits heat from the water very well, clean up is easy, and when you hear the clatter throughout the house from me dropping them, at least the curses and grumbles have diminished!! I use two sizes of bowl: o In keeping with the 'scuttle' idea of keeping a brush warm, one I have loaded from a puck and use for face lather, I employ a small bowl. o For prepping creams I need a larger bowl, but similarly float it nested inside a larger SS container. These keep the brushes and soap wonderfully warm by easily refreshing the hot water from the tap, I can place them in the porcelain sink without fear of scratching anything, and all in all I am totally satisfied with this type of system. Scuttle Bowl - for loaded brush heating Cream Bowl - for prepping and heating I would love to see some other pics of what folks are using to keep their lather and brush deliciously warm!! Thanx for the thread Fuzzy!

I face lather, but if I ever decided to give that up I'd give it up for the hot lather that a scuttle provides.

I load the brush from my puck o da day, lather up, and place the brush in the small bowl floating in hot, hot water in the larger bowl. That way when I am ready for my 2nd pass, I just pick the brush out of the bowl - and as long as I loaded properly before the first pass - I have a second application that is toasty happy face warm!!! Give it a try! You will not turn back.

I have a tiny SS mixing bowl, I'll need to give that a try.
Is it possible to use water that's too hot for the lather? When I shave in the winter I have a kettle of boiling water beside me, and a basin of water near 130°F in front of me. Float the inner bowl in boiling water or in the basin?

Not into scuttles but have seen many of my shave buddies who do use them and they are quite nice.
I simply lather my creams in a large mug I got at Target a few years ago and when I use a soap I usually face lather and I keep the brush warm in a smaller shave mug I got at a steal from an antique dealer.
Would like to see some of the scuttles that some of you guys have. Post some pix please.

Scroll down on this page until you see an item called the "Brush Scuttle." Quite a nifty idea and I have thought many times about getting one. A google search too will pull up a bunch of forum threads regarding this particular scuttle.

Christmas will be here before we know it and the wife will be looking for a gift for the hardest person on the planet to buy for.
Thanks for that!

I semi-homemade a brush scuttle out of one of those old glass power line insulator things. The heavy glass does a great job holding the heat in, but due to it's size it only fits my smaller brushes. I might have to look into one of those Dirty Birds too!

Thanks Nate for the link to the Brush Scuttle. Nice idea but I can't see spend that kind of money for something that will not improve my shave in any great measure.
But for some folks I can see where they would go that route. Me, I guess in this area of the shaving routine I am just too "cheap". ;D
