I recently found out that we have a local Art of Shaving store here in Baton Rouge. It is a nice store and has the reallyyyyy expensive barber shop attached. I have used the creams but not the soaps. Any one have thoughts on the soap? They are of course expensive to a Williams guy like me. The winning point is that I have a vintage wood bowl and cover that I think they would fit into. What do you guys think? Is it worth the time and money to try one of the soaps?

I think it's good soap. Unfortunately, it's not as good as it was when it was being made by Valobra in Italy. The Italian stuff is some of the best soap around. But sometime towards the end of 2012-beginning of 2013 Proctor & Gamble changed the AOS soap to a US made product that, while still a very good soap, isn't quite as good as the old formula.
That said, if I could still use products with fragrance I'd keep a puck of the Sandalwood around because it's one of my all-time favorite fragrances. So if you have a favorite fragrance of theirs, the soaps are definitely not duds. They work pretty nicely. Whether they're worth $30 a piece is hard to say.
But just for the shaving qualities, I'd say there are cheaper options that are just as good like DR Harris. Valobra also now makes a soap that is basically identical to the old AOS formula.

Sorry if this sounds biased, but I find AOS completely overpriced. Each of their products. And I find them mediocre at best (their preshave oil is a complete and utter nightmare). Shipping would probably kill you (I completely fail to understand why apparently no US based vendor stocks these soaps), but Savon de rasage au lait d'ânesse Menthe petit grain by Savonnerie du bon Berger will blow AOS's soap (and almost any other I know) out of the water. At €12 for 100g. The scent is very pedestrian (basically, an English mint lozenge), but the performance is outstanding. As in Villoresi outstanding. So, no, I personally would not buy AOS products, if only because they have a 30% markup for marketing and advertising.

Well, they also make Tide, Mr Clean and Tampax, so they must know what they are doing. And oh yeah - Gillette Fusion Gel. All high end stuff. No bias here.
