I am wondering, surely what these replating services advertised on the boards and the like charge for a replate, $60 in nickel and $100 in gold, isn't the real cost of electroplating. Considering that it is known that they outsource to the companies that actually do the plating there must surely be a huge markup they charge to make a profit. Maybe we can pool our razors and get a very good price on them at the real cost. Any thoughts?

I have wondered the same thing myself. Admittedly, I have no clue what prep work is involved though. I own one razor that someone else had replated and the transformation from that sandblasted hunk of junk is remarkable.
Maybe the money is in having someone do the prep work that cares about the razor. I've had auto parts plated end up "out of spec" and wonky due to various plate thickness problems.

I guess I should clarify, I'm very interested in a reasonably priced group replate. I've got a two razors that are scruffy but at the same time some of my favorites.
I just haven't been able to warrant $60 for a replate on a razor I paid $3 for at a store. If I had stuck around a few more minutes, I think the lady would have given it to me. She knew all about it, just wanted it gone.

I'm still very interested in the replating project and am following this thread enthusiastically

Genetic I would imagine.

The address to the thread is below. I couldn't get it to link for some reason. It seems doable, I've just not had time to try it. badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/431728-Teacup-Nickel-PlatingAs far as the other board is concerned, they could have viewed it as advertising, but I've seen more than a few closed minds on some sites. I just can't fathom the additudes some people have about what I call my projects. "I say it can't be done, so that's final!" Maybe someone is making a tidy sum with the razor replate market on that site. Then again, it could be protecting an investment made in an expensive replate. "I paid $70 to replate a $10 razor. It's worth $80!" That's like a $2000 radio in a $500 dollar car. If it's worth it to you, great. Don't expect everyone else to share your view. I have to wonder when the razor market is going to split into mint condition, not mint, and replated? How would anyone know? Someone out there will make that leap, if they haven't already. I'll stop my ranting before I go off about the used car markets that some board's BST have become.

I am not sure replating raises the value that much. Not to me anyway. I would guess a lot of the cost goes to the prep work. And they have to pay for the machines and such I guess. But still paying that much for something that does not improve the shave....... It's over my pay grade I guess.
