A couple of days ago I entered an antique store out of curiosity, I was wandering around when suddenly a familiar red and blue box with a vessel on it catches my eye...it was a vintage minty Old Spice mug with its untouched soap still inside!
Needless to say, I bought it...for 6 Euros it was a real deal, given the excellent conditions. Had I not known that this soap hasn't been made for at least 25 years, I would have thought it had no more than a couple of years.
Anyway, now the question is the following: I've never used such an old soap before, do I need to "rehydrate" it in some way before giving it a go?

Funny, that ... I just picked up a box fresh, new, vintage pack of Old Spice soap and mug.

When I got my cake of this I just used it like any other soap. Hope you enjoy.

I always grate vintage soaps into a Ziploc container and have found that some are a bit drier and "crumblier" than others. After I've grated the puck I wet my fingers and pack it all down. I don't use very much water, just enough that the pieces don't stick to my fingers, so I guess I do technically rehydrate it but I don't dump a bunch of water on it. Congratulations on finding an excellent vintage soap, I love using Old Spice.

Funny, that ... I just picked up a box fresh, new, vintage pack of Old Spice soap and mug. I saw your photo in the SOTD section, and it is exactly the same as mine. When do you think it was made? I would say it could be almost my age (1979) but the cardbox seems to be in surprisingly good condition... the colours are still brilliant and there's only the slightest signs of the tipical yellow-ish in the inner part. Did it lather properly? Mine wasn't easy on the first attempt, but I can see that after a couple of uses it is getting better.

I think mine is from the '70s ...
Yes, it was okay. Lathered up fine, not as good as present day Tabac, for example, but a lot better than some "artisan" soaps I've tried. Perhaps a little foamy, but that is easily beaten back to produce a thicker lather.

As a soap, performance-wise, I couldn't get overly excited about it ... it did the job. But, the mug, the scent and the overall experience do bring it back up to par. The juice is worth the squeeze. Old Spice aftershave, conversely, is THE best aftershave. If the present P&G is that good, I can only imagine how good vintage must be.

I agree the soap is just a solid soap. Nothing fancy. What makes it neat is that it's vintage OS.
