A couple of weeks ago I purchased my first pipe and a small quantity of black Cavendish from a tobacconist in a nearby town. Last week I had other business in that town, so I visited said establishment in hopes of procuring an English-type blend with Latakia (I like smoky things) and Oriental tobaccos (same with spicy things).
I was the only customer, and the clerk explained the political and ecological issues regarding Syrian Latakia, and allowed me to compare the aroma of a vintage Syrian blend with that of a Cyprian blend. (The Syrian is more subtle but seemed more complex to my uneducated nose.)
Then he began to lecture me on how unworthy I am to experience the legacy Syrian blend, and telling this grizzled, old mountain man that I need to slowly expand my palate before buying the tobacco for which I visited the shop in the first place. I'm not saying he is necessarily wrong, but my favorite tea is dried over pine fires, and I season my eggs each morning with habañero sauce, so I see no reason not to experience the tobacco I wanted.
As it turns out, a couple of younger male people arrived after I had, and were looking at pipes. The shop clerk decided they were more worthy of his attention than I was, so he excused himself and engaged them, leaving me high and dry.
I value local businesses to the extent I will overpay for, oh, say, an estate pipe that was a gift-with-purchase for a pouch of tobacco way back when. However, I am not inclined to spend what little of my hard-earned money is budgeted for non-essential things at places like this.
What do you fellas think?

I would have been THAT cranky guy. He would have been told exactly what I thought of him. I will also pay a bit more for a local place. I will not for poor service though. Cornell and Diehl make the blends I smoke. Try their Engine 99 for Latakia or Old Joe Kranz for Perique. I would order from pipes snd cigars before I went back to that guy.

Now-a-days you can get most anything online. Yes it is nice to go in a store and talk to someone that has some knowledge on what you are looking for and to support a local business but after the way he treated you I wouldn't go back other than to say you were looking to do research for an online purchase.

Yeah, I came close to telling him what I think of his "service." Thankfully, I received an important call just then, so I left. I'll look into those Cornell and Diehl offerings. I could certainly showroom at that shop. It's just so difficult to maintain a straight face because they guy behaves like a pompous...well, you know the rest.

I went to Anchorage for a week some years ago. I did not run into any stuck up people then though. It's all just stuff you stick in a pipe and burn. Sheesh. I bet he dosn't like a good corn cob pipe either.
