It's certainly not an attractive razor. Seems to be some problems with machining and quality control as well. No thanks. I'll keep my G-Bar and Pushbutton and be quite content. Those new fangled things are pretty good. Have you tried the older stuff? The 1912..or 1914..or 1924? GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!!!!!!!! hehehe

Well I dont find it Ugly :-) I have had great luck with PAA razors, there Slants are tributes to vintage German razors and work so nice and sure beat paying 200 bucks for the orginals. The Prismatic is also tribute to French Razor. I have another modern GEM - the Turkish Rocnel and that is a bad ass razor - uber aggressive and works great. So for under 40 bucks I had to get the starling and I commend PAA for trying there best to create a SE razor - You cant fault them for being innovative. SO it comes with 2 plates - blue is mild and gold is aggressive. First shave i did 2 passes with the blue plate and it barely cut whiskers Just way too mild - for final pass I switched to the gold plate it was okay and cut but more mild than a Contour II... Now the carbon blade is fore sure more mild and smoother than a PTFE and that is i why i always use them on old/agressive Gems.. I am using the aggressive plate tonight with PTFE and I think it will be much better - the blue plate will never be used again - just not aggressive enough.. But being a SE lover and Gem lover - I WELCOME NEW PRODUCTS - you can't fault the effort!! I personally love the vintage razors and can not bring my self to pay the dough for a new SE razor when they are well over $100. That being said I do have a RR Black Hawk and an Al General as well as the SS one. Colonial Razors did an excellent job on their General Razor and the price point is at the top of my price point.
Now with that being said, across the street over at TSD some people had an issue with the QC of their Starling Razor. The thread can be found HERE. My question to you is, "Do you have the same issues with yours as the other poster did?" Phoenix is within my price point but until the QC issues can be worked out I can not pull the trigger on one.
On a lighter note if you ever need your Rocnel to be stored in a satellite location I have a place that will fit the bill.

Personally - I LOVE the Rocnel SE G - great GEM type and aggressive as all hell. Now the Starling - 1st off as disclaimer, I am part of the HTGAM Gplus group (PAA/CK) and i love there products and Doug is a good guy to me. Now the Rocnel I bought it used and it really the only crazy expensive moder razor i own - I love vintage razors! but also like new ones. Now, my track record with PAA razors are that ALL HAVE there DE's I bought are great for me - No bad ones. So i was excited for the Single Edge and the price was under 40 bucks. Okay - most here love Carbon SE blades over the PTFE - I love carbon and it TAMES the old agressive razors for me, the PTFE just was not smooth and i dont use them on my old razors, and in my ROCNEL I use carbons because it is aggresive. The Starling - 1st shave last night I used the Mild plate with a new PAL carbon - i swear the blade barely cut! I think with a PTFE it will cut, still need to try on that plate. I swticed to the GOLD aggressive Plate with the PAL and yes it cut and was like a Milder version of the Contour II - my guess is a TOSTer will not want this. But I do support PAA for releasing this - and he did work on it for a long time, so glad there was the aggressive plate - as far as build - it is a quality built product - just way to mild with the blue plate and still too mild with gold. There is a legion of Trolls that just love to trash PAA so i am sure there will be negative feed back - but I am not like that and I like PAA and I dont get involved with that kinda stuff - but Constructive Critiscm is cool - just i would never trash a person for bustin' ass to to bring a new GEM to the masses. I would love to see more folks try and lets face it - some day the old ones will get to expensive and rare - On a ligher note - i got a new GEM JR BAR LC that kicks butt...

I was tempted to get the PAA SE, but I resisted. It looks very interesting, but in the end, I talked myself out of it. I am glad I did. I hope it is a success for others though.

Some folks over at TSD say this razor has some issues. Glad I did not pull the trigger on this.My RAD has subsided greatly anyway since my bucket list of razors across the spectrum have been fulfilled pretty much with the last couple of purchases.(within my price range anyway)

Folks - I have used this new fangled contraption 3 times - I am sticking to me old stuff.
With the blue plate - Totally flat on face with proper angle it barely cut using a new carbon blade (and the blade was fine)... So next day I used a carbon on the aggressive Gold plate and I was off my game and did NOT have the plate totally flat against face (we know the GEM's are somewhat forgiving - not this thing) - and THE CORNERS DUG IN after one pass on cheek it looked like my wife to her finger nails to my face. Even the MODERN ROCNEL SE-G was more forgiving and nothing happened to me... I am thinking a SS PTFE would work OK with the Blue plate - but even at that it would compare to the featherweight. the Gold Beta plate - is weird and I was turned off after that corner fiasco - I will revisit this in a few months when I am bored... but on a lighter note - I am using a newly acquired GEM Junior bar tonight - it is Gorgoues and in EXCELLENT Shape.
So - basically - GET OFF MY LAWN u modern contraptions

I still say it is ugly as home made sin....but. So one of my youtube friends sent me a Starling...the new version I guess. It came with a open comb and closed comb. Of course OC was first. To be honest I had no issues with it. The blade was not hard to load and everything fit nice and tight. This one really is a face hoe. The shave was easy and very much a top line DFS. No dragging or anything like that. I would still say I would not buy a modern SE. I figure since this one was a gift I will use it some. It will also be a loaner here soon. SOTD picture. Andddddddddd.... video

I am with you on buying a modern SE, however, I would be down for a passaround. Put me on that list if there is one.

Not to be too presumptuous, but I'd like to be on the list as well. Given our close proximity, I'm perfectly fine to be absolutely last.
