When I lived in Istanbul, I got spoiled by the Arko Stick and creams...at the time, the Derby creams were substandard performance wise...whenever I picked one up I always tossed it. But the Arko creams were rich and I thought performed way above their pricepoint.
The new Arko Ice Mint, is a standout...But I liked all their creams...But the stick was da Bomba!!

But you are right! I guess the Derby does perform within it's pricepoint which is cheap...But when in Turkey you always had the Arko available for the same price and it's performing like a cream that costs 4xs as much!

VdH is horrible in my opinion. Mitchell's Wool Fat used to be much inferior to Scottish Fine Soaps, but the latter has been discontinued, unfortunately. They have a shave gel, though, which I intend to pick up in February. Last time I visited their outlet, I was able to buy unstamped soap pucks for 99 cents apiece... We somehow forgot Italian and Spanish soaps. I cannot find the super cheap (and horribly almond scented) 1kg Cella thing, but there is always Vitos Extra Super Shaving Soap 1KG which should last one roughly ten years for $28.90 (IIRC, Cella was half the price). Also, Valobra is fantastic, and cheap, if you can source it locally. That said, maybe we should define "cheap" first. In my initial reply, I mixed super cheap (like, less than $1) with "cheap for what it is" (Green Mountain Soaps, which are quadruple milled and infused with their own glycerin). So, "cheap" can be relative. I find Proraso extremely expensive (compared to Groomed!, for example), and also Martin de Candre (compared to Meißner Tremonia or Savon Du Midi). That said, if you're in the UK, check out these Creightons products. Biggest bang for the buck I know, made by the company that, apparently, makes all well known English creams (not soaps, though).

Every one knows my thoughts on being cheap. Great thread. I see a few things I need to try. So your saying when you open your wallet moths fly out? @vintagelife , have you used the puck of Arko, or just the stick. @robink thanks for your input! It is valuable! Sir Bird birdlives why the low ranking on the Derby creams? Price? performance? Scent? I have the menthol cream and it works at a level I would expect for the price. I have one tube of Arko cream(can't remember which one) and it performed just as well as the Palmolive cream and the old spice creams. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the VDH soaps. Individually they work better than some others of a higher price point. I have the puck and stick. They seem the same. Puck has the cool dude stamped on it though.

Do the cheap easily available products produce a good shave, yes! But they don't hold a candle to the artisans popping up in the wet shaving world.

Scents do not help performance. Most people are trying to make a butter cream lather. All fluff and stuff. I love some of the soaps..Stirling comes to mind...but the shave is no different then with the simple stuff.

I whole-heartedly concur, my fine fuzzied-friend....The best things in life, are quite often defined, by their simplistic nature. It's the smallest details that can make the biggest difference. Like, simply getting a great shave can set the tone for the whole day. I prefer getting my time and date from my watch, not my cell phone. Simple pleasures mean the most...

If you want to use something for your shave, then by all means knock it out of the park!!! I don't have to like it, but it's not my shave. I have some TOBS, and Stirling, and use them regularly. I just like to try and see how cheap Incan be and still get great shaves.

I agree with you guys. Scent doesn't help performance obviously. Huge voluminous clouds doesn't mean anything either. But these new artisans are making slicker soap that also does wonders for skin health in my opinion.
