After watching @whcnu last shave video, you know, the one where the dog ate the charger (hahahahaha) and where he had 16 rants in one video?. I got to thinking about something that was surprisingly coherent and I think it would be a good thing for us to discuss. What shave soaps do you use, that are cheap, but perform on a marked level above the price point? I have long used Arko, and of course Williams, but also the Van Deer Hagen white and pink soaps I put in that same category. They are cheap,.but the lather you get from then is exponentially greater than the price point. I like the Derby creams, in the tubes, as well as the Palmolive tube. I'm still working on my Wilkinson Sword stick, so the jury is still out. What say yall?

First off, I think I'm behind on my Fuzzy videos....last one I saw was the witch hazel shave, which I thought was pretty cool, especially since he used a Schick E2. But back to the matter at hand: I would second your choice of Williams, Arko, and Palmolive soaps, sticks and creams. The Palmolive I have is a shave stick, and it works shocking well. The only challenge with it is getting it shipped here (the U.S.)...I think Palmolive is generally a low-cost product for the folks in the UK and Europe since I think they can pick it up in shops; but even when you tag on shipping, it's still relatively inexpensive and definitely "punches above it's weight."
I wish I had something more to add to the list, but while my contribution is limited, I'm not above taking notes on what folks have to say on this thread and learn from those experiences.

I do think Arko Stick and Williams are the BEST...regardless of price...
Derby tube creams I do not think should be mentioned in the same breath as Arko creams...In fact Arko has a bew menthol cream that I rate much better than even proraso. Thicker lather and stronger menthol!

Arko, definitely...cheap as chaps, but always delivers. Also the dutch soap De Vergulde Hand. Then all the Proraso classic line, which here in Italy is very cheap, and also the Vitos as well...outstanding performer, at 9€ per 1kg of soap, hard to beat that.

Of the few that I have tried, Arko stick and Derby creams in a tube perform above their price point. Hey birdlives, are you referring to "Arko Cool Shaving Cream"? Is that the one with menthol in it? Italian Barber has it listed, but the description is very brief, and doesn't mention menthol..

Godrej shave round and the creams are pretty good performers if you get them at the right price.

Im a huge arko fan! Slickest soap I know of. Other than vintage old spice. I also proved $1.00 dollar tree Pears soap will make a good lather. Not very slick though.

Very good. Thanks for the explanation. My pleasure....the "Cool" is ok....but the Extra Fresh "Ice Mint" is a solid menthol performer, snd being so inexpensive is also an extra bonus. Arko strikes again! And I've seen this on Amazon if you have a hard time scoring...Does your usual source carry Arko Ice Mint ?

I don't really have a regular source, but Maggard and Italian Barber are the most used online shops, followed by my orders directly from the makers, like Stirling. I have a few items on my list already, but I need to clear some items from the den first. When it comes time to buy, the hunt is part of the adventure. :-)

Every one knows my thoughts on being cheap. Great thread. I see a few things I need to try.

Every one knows my thoughts on being cheap. Great thread. I see a few things I need to try. So your saying when you open your wallet moths fly out? @vintagelife , have you used the puck of Arko, or just the stick. @robink thanks for your input! It is valuable! Sir Bird birdlives why the low ranking on the Derby creams? Price? performance? Scent? I have the menthol cream and it works at a level I would expect for the price. I have one tube of Arko cream(can't remember which one) and it performed just as well as the Palmolive cream and the old spice creams. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the VDH soaps. Individually they work better than some others of a higher price point.
