Not a new beast, rather their new home. The usual storage dilemma hit me. Stand or storage box. Basically I have never found a single razor stand that I would find perfect. Most of them are too bulky, lacks elegance, and even if I found something that is closer to my expectations, it simply does not match the number of razors I would like to keep on it. So I decided I will need a box. The close to perfect solution would be of a form factor of a cigar box, wide and not too high. Until then, I just walked into a hobby shop, and bought an unfinished wooden box, dyed and varnished it, and covered inside with sponge rubber. I sacrificed a sheet from those I use as photo background. I am happy with how it turned out, although the size of the box is not ideal. [EDIT: First I uploaded a photo with some of my razors in it, but as it displayed some unmentionables, I swapped it to another shot I used for an SOTD with an injector and the other requisites. The photos with the box closed remain a mystery, anything can be in the box from the Little Prince's sheep to razors you can't imagine. ]

Although this Star is not mine, I have it for a while, until I manage to print a blade adapter that takes GEM blades (spine on). I tried it with this original freshly honed and stropped hollow ground blade, but I'm afraid it wasn't sharp enough.

Finally a new addition to the den. It is a .... not sure how it is called, calling for your help. Here's the deal. On most of the sites, you will find this referred to as Wilkinson 1925 Pall Mall set. Although none of the advertisements really call them like this. With little exceptions, Wilkinson ads call straight razors as Razor, everything else as Safety Shaver or Single Safety Shaver, until the Empire sets were introduced, being the first razor with a model name. The most authentic name is on the below advertisement, No. 122 set, as this version has 3 hollow ground blades. I'm surely not going to call it No. 122, furthermore as with the Ever-Ready "Streamlines", it is the name of the set, not the razor. Now the Safety Razor Compendium book also calls this the Pall Mall, stating, that it is written in the box. I have seen 50+ photos, none of them had Pall Mall written in their box. None of my two "Pall Malls" have it. So either there are variants I haven't seen, or the book is wrong. And I need to add, that at that time the address of the company was 53. Pall Mall, London SW. which address was present in all of the newspaper ads. Might be the source of the misconception? Naming aside, let me introduce you my latest favorite, the razor that needs no introduction, the pre-Empire model, that takes a GEM blade as well. I have two at the moment. (Long story, only need one.) Both are in perfect mechanical order. Meaning, that this beast has a working roller guard (it's rolling), the adjustment screw can set the distance between the blade edge and the roller guard, the spring holds the blade in place, and the angle of the razor head can be set by twisting down the handle a bit, and firmly twisting back after the angle is set. As I don't use straight razors, I know nothing about stropping or honing, so I fall back to using GEM blades. The first shave was perfect. Efficient, comfortable leaving no less than a BBS and very little irritation, which is fair for a first use. Did I say it was pretty?

About that unobtanium Asylum RX. I still think it is one of the most amazing razors. I still think it is one of the most beautiful razors. It is very photogenic as well. I just don't reach for it too often, I simply prefer all of my vintage razors. I was thinking about selling it, when I recognized I will never be able to do so, at least not without losing a lot. This is basically the world's most expensive Asylum RX, and I tell you why. I bought it at RazorEmporium used for $250. So far so good, it retailed for $260. I am from Hungary. Shipping was $20, we pay 5% customs after product + shipping, plus 27% tax for all of this, plus $10 for customs handling fee. This has put a whopping 48% on top of the original price, Total Cost of Ownership is $370. In the meanwhile all of the Asylums I saw selling on other sites went for or below $230. Either I need someone interested from Europe, who is well aware his TCO would have been similar (except for the crazy 27% Hungarian VAT) or I keep it and use it once in a while (when I want to take a nice photo). Anyway, it doesn't feel like putting this up to any forum's B/S/T like this. Maybe a raffle?

Nice looking razor. I wouldn't spend that much money on a razor handle though. I didn't spend that much on my toggles.

Nice looking razor. I wouldn't spend that much money on a razor handle though. I didn't spend that much on my toggles. Well, the toggles I see for sale end up above $1000. But I really wanted this one, this is my only expensive razor, and in fact I am happy to keep it. But you agree it is unlikely that it can be sold above it's already high original retail price, right?

A 1000 dollars? Oh my. The only way to tell is to see what they are being sold for. If you like it, that's all that really matters.

*Ahem* -- just a quick reminder that the super expensive razor you guys are currently discussing is an unmentionable....fortunately "He who throws Bricks" appears to have not noticed, but that could change in a blink of an eye. I strongly recommend we talk about "mentionable" Fantastic Beasts....there are plenty of them too.
