I found this brush for $10 at a local antique store and have had it done for awhile but I wanted to use it a few times so that I could comment on the Ace Shaving 20 mm boar knot. Ace sells these in lots of six for $13.99 plus $5.99 shipping, and I had a $10 off eBay coupon so I ended up paying $9.98 for six knots. Not too shabby price-wise. The original knot in the ER was actually in pretty decent shape, but this one seemed like a good candidate to try the Ace in since it's the classic red and white design that almost everyone likes.
I have used it three times now, and I have to say I really like the knot. It's a fairly stiff knot, and I'm sure it will get softer with more use, but after just three uses I can already see ends that are splitting. I don't know how it would work for face lathering, but it works great for bowl lathering. It picks up soap quickly and seems to release the lather easily on the face. All in all I think it's well worth the low price and they are a good choice for boar knots since TGN and Whippeddog have very limited choices when it comes to boars.
One negative thing I did notice was the glue knot extends well above the plastic cup, and could be an issue in mounting it in some handles. Also some glue is visible on the bottom of the hairs so that it looks like glues has oozed out of the handle. A minor point but worth mentioning.
OK, on to the pictures. Here's a couple before shots.
And here's the finished brush. I used Testors gold paint for the letters because I've seen some pictures of similar ER 100's and they appeared to be gold. White was used on the bottom.
And here it is "bloomed" after one test lather and three uses.
