I just won one of these on eBay. It looks to be mint and in its original box. Anyone have one of these? I'll share some pics when it gets here. (May put up the eBay pics later if I have time.) Thoughts on this razor?

I have almost added one of these to my pile a bunch of times but never quiteclosed in. It was a low cost safety in the day with a great box. I dont recall if they take modern wafer blades or use their own. I will pick one up some day and I'm looking forward to hearing more about yours.

That is why I haven't added one to the ever-growing collection. I have and Enders which takes propriety blades. I thought this was true of the Burham razors also, but I am no means an expert.

There is a closed comb & open comb version of this razor. I've spotted an open comb version (with a swivel design handle) but the asking price is ridiculous.

Yeah, I seen that one too. That's a bit ridiculous, in my opinion.

I assumed it was always the same razor and have never quite given a hard look at it. Thnx for pointing this out.

RocketMan, here is a picture of a closed comb & open comb version of the Burham. From my understanding the open comb razor (in the picture) is a Burham razor that was sold by the Morley Sales Co.

One crack research team here!
Very interesting stuff. I'm still surprised by this though. It is true that you learn something new everyday.

Yes the history of the cutlery business in the state of New York has many relationships with other makers and distributors. I used to collect knives and that can drive one nuts trying to figure out who made what. It's a good thing I like history and detective stories. Enjoy the weekend!

I've got a closed comb version of the Burham. Got it for a song about 4 years ago. Don't use it very much as I find it much too light for my taste. Got it for a song and because it was a cute minimalistic SE razor. Takes modern SE blades and give me a decent shave. I think that I just might load up a blade in mine and use it today.

I am resurrecting this thread from days past. A while back I picked up two Burham razors (one open-comb, one closed-comb). Monday (4/22) and today (4/24) I used the OC version. During these shaves I also decided to use another razor for the 3rd/clean-up pass -- mostly because I wanted to get some more experience with both of these clean-up razors (GEM Push Button & Schick E3). These razors take a proprietary sized blade, but they will accept a GEM -- either with or without the spine (i.e., folded metal backing). I don't have an original proprietary blade, but it would appear that while the width of the GEM blade is perfect, the ideal depth is somewhere between a de-spined (a little too short) and a spine-intact (a little too long) GEM. 1st use was Monday's shave using a de-spined GEM SS PTFE blade along with a GEM Push Button sporting a Treet Carbon blade: The first pass with the Burham was VERY mild....the blade is just a touch too far back from the teeth, but it still cut hair reasonably well, just very quietly and without any blade feel -- and not what I would describe as efficient. The 2nd Burham pass took stubble off, but I definitely needed a full-on 3rd pass. The clean-up batter stepped in (the Push Button) with a full 3rd pass and some subsequent spot-touchups -- final result was a (relatively) close (but incredibly) comfortable shave. 2nd use was today's shave using a regular (non-molested) GEM SS PTFE blade along with a Shick E3 carrying a "chick" blade: The first pass was MUCH nicer (at least for me)!!! Blade feel and great cutting power -- but still felt mildish....which for me means no weepers or irritation or feeling like I could be bitten if I let my mind wander. This beastie-looking razor is actually very tame. The 2nd pass (XTG) went off without a hitch, and I could've just done a quick witch-hazel pass for the trouble spots, but since the E3 had come to play, I stuck with my plan. The Shick E3 (which until recently I had misidentified as an E2) did a full 3rd pass with the final shave being BBS everywhere but my Adams apple area. Awesome shave!!! Exceptionable in both closeness and comfort!!! So a couple more pics of the Burham (OC) and a few more comments: I like this razor -- a lot -- but for me the unmolested GEM (intact-spine) is the right blade -- given I don't have an "original" Burham blade. The combination of blade feel, cutting power and mild temperament makes this a winner for me. It's an okay razor with a de-spined blade, and for some that may be preferable...it actually made me flashback to the the Starling with the green comb. The weight of this razor (with a regular GEM blade) is 29 grams (just a notch over 1 ounce), and it seems that many people aren't fond of razors this light. After using some light Lather Catchers (i.e., Kampfe Bros), the light weight and shortish handles just don't bother me. I used to think I preferred heavier longer tools, but now I'm not so sure....I wouldn't change a thing about this beauty -- I love the simple and effective design. Visually it reminds of another razor I've admired from afar, that is jayaruh's homemade wooden open comb razor. I will also post my shaves with the closed-comb version of this razor here as well. For now, I'm enjoying the Burham with the Open Comb!!!

Just adding this link ( click here) to provide those interested in Burham razors with more info. As usual, riverrun has done an excellent job of providing measurements and insights into this excellent razor.
