Mühle IMHO is making the very best synthetic shaving brushes on the planet currently. While most people love their Silvertip Fibre (STF) I greatly prefer the Black Fibre (BF). I recently picked up a new VIVO style BF from Connaught and love the knot and the looks of the VIVO Horn handle. However, the handle is. It the most ergonomic and can get slippery. I then saw Rudy Vey post that he received some BF knots straight from Mühle so I asked him to make me a Alibaba BF & I love the results.

The horn is nice but that blue swirled Alibaba not only looks great but seems to be more to my ergonomic likings.
Hmmmm...... You wouldn't be enabling me again, would you Brian???

Good looking brushes for sure. I've read a lot of good stuff about the Black Fibre knots.

If I had the time, I'd love to put one in an old ER handle. Love the restoration threads, but no time to do that right now.

Enabler! :-)
Looks great Brian. Enjoy!
Todays synthetics IMO truly are fantasic. When I got going in blade shaving I thought anyone talking about synthetic brushes was insane. I'm sure glad I buttoned my lip back then and just read and learned. It saved me a lot of eating crow.
Question... what is different between the BF knot and the current (or the last) STF knot you used? I guess I'm asking what makes the BF knot better for you.

Brian, I find the BF knot to be much softer than the STF. To me the STF is actually a bit rough at the tips and the springiness of the fibres along with the density just didn't feel right to me. The Black Fibre knot is softer at the tips and less dense. This allows more splay without the feeling of the fibres wanting to rebound back as hard. It's just a more enjoyable experience for me.

Thanks Brian. That helps me to gauge the difference in the fibers.

I didn't realize that you had a monster synthetic. With how easily a 21mm knot can produce lather I can only imagine that you are using a 28mm brush to shave Sasquatch up there in the woods.

I never thought I'd ever like such a huge brush. If it was natural fiber it would never work for me. I almost embarassed my undies when I received it, but after the first face lather I knew it was a keeper. Synthetics just work differently. ( Yeah , I know... Duhhhh! :-) Bright statement. ) The monster (Frank Shaving Pur-Tech 28 x 54mm Gen 4 V2 STF) synthetic compared to a Chubby1. IMO it makes the Chubby1 look like a small brush, which it isn't.

More like Snubby 1 as the FS Synth just dominated it. That is quite the large brush.

I've been a synth only user from the very beginning and way back in '07 there wasn't much choice and what there was was largely rubbish. I went through about five or six brushes before finally giving up altogether and going brushless. The only half decent one was the Body Shop synthetic, it wasn't a great performer but at least it was cheap. The performance of todays synthetic brushes is like night and day compared to what was around back then. I currently have a Mühle STF v2 but I might be acquiring a few more brushes in the near future.
