It is good to hear you have found a new best shaving Gem! How did you find the handle length? I think it would feel pretty good with the sturdy length yeah?

Held right at the end, thumb and first two fingers, it worked out fine ... yes, a little short, but a good shave nevertheless.

How much does replating generally cost? I'm sure the price differs depending on material picked. Do replaters "clean up" the razor (ie. strip it down before replating"?

Birdlives suggested that I post some pictures from my collection, so I'll bump this thread and start with one of my prizes. I too have been fortunate enough to acquire a Gem de Luxe set, the first of the 1912 series. Both razor and case are in very good condition, with minor scratches and just a tiny bit of brassing. According to Waits, the included spring-loaded blade bank may have been the first blade dispenser. It is packaged in a very nice leather covered case. In this side view the origin of the Damaskeene head is obvious. The back features only a "Gem de Luxe" marking and "Pat," which (I'm guessing) would be short for Patent Pending. That pending patent would be, of course, the famous 1912 patent. Conspicuous by its absence is the 1912 patent marking found around the handle thread on 1912's. No Damaskeene stamping, in fact, nothing at all. The inside of the base plate is completely devoid of markings. Here the open comb is quite evident. I believe that there was originally a stropper that screwed into the handle. Unfortunately, that is missing from this set. With its open comb I was expecting it to be an aggressive shaver, but it has proven to be quite smooth. Perhaps not surprisingly, it reminds me very much of my Damaskeenes. In 1911 this set sold for $3.50, which was a lot of money back then. --Bob
