Lovely! I bought a couple of lather catchers recently, but Mrs swiped them off me to give as presents from the cats on my birthday. Almost there ...

I stole a page out of the 1911 Gem Catalog. The Gem Forged Set #2 was worth $2.50 in 1911. Today's value is $63.38.

Just an amazing, amazing set because of the Z on the latch. Mary, Martin and Arthur Zinn were some of the early geniuses behind these fabulous razors.

I think it's safe to say the Zinn's are behind this beauty.....I believe I see August's fingerprints on that one too....Especially the purse latch blade holder style....Tom, you are certainly not exagerating when you use the word "geniuses" in this context. What a work of Fuctional Art...Congrats on a great catch....

I tried to shave on Sunday with a new Gem SS blade, but it was horrible. It felt as if the blade was moving with each stroke. I put it aside and salvaged the shave with my Canadian Schick. I posted on another site the problem that I have, and I found that the blade does not fit in the razor. When the blade latch is engaged it puts pressure on the blade and the blade is bent at the spine which contorts the cutting edge. I have some suggestions of adding an extra spine to try stiffen the blade and also to remove the spine to see if it fits better, and also to just use the wedge blades that originally came with the razor. Any other suggestions.

Ah, that's you over on B&B ... a pal of mine sent me the link and asked if I knew anything.
I have to say, it looks odd. These razors were designed to take these blades. To me it looks like the side stop - the blade guides - are perhaps too tight causing a downward flex in the middle which manifests itself as the upward curve at the front.
Does the flex lessen if you relieve the pressure at the back? Pull the back clip back a little and see what happens. It might just be that the clip is too tight. Removing the spine might take some of the tautness out of the equation since it will have a millimetre or so off the total depth of the blade.

Could it also be to do with the blades that are available to us now are thinner than the blades originally used in this razor? Perhaps a shim would help?
