Has anyone seen one of these in the flesh? It looks like a bit of fun ... Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but there is a slot at the front of the razor - what's it for? Might it take an actual blade?

Does it take a plastic wedge blade or a modern plastic blade? That "rare" Gem razor goes together with ...

Ah,ha,ha,ha...... I had one of those razors many years ago. I don't remember how I got it...I think one of my little cousins left it at my house...I never had a blade for it...You could easily make a cardboard blade... Theres wasn't any set with mine, and definitely no doll...Just a toy razor that didn't really look like a razor...

Is it sad that I have been lurking here for a while, and this is the post that makes me join? For many years, I used to collect toys. Now I collect razors. So toy razors is basically a given. The pictured plastic Gem Jr. does indeed take a blade. It is cardboard, and comes in an actual Gem box. It was made by the Merry Manufacturing Co. in the '50s. Give me a second, and I will post pics.

The first Merry shaving set, 1955 1957 set, different art, same contents First style Gem Jr. with blade Later razor. With pushbutton style logo. Sorry for the huge picture. The pushbutton Gem Jr at top, plus two other SE toy razors from Merry Mfg. Not marked Gem, but shaped like a featherweight, or G Bar. Not a Gem, but once of my favorites. Toy Schick Adjustable, complete with injector.

Vintage merry mfg. Hong Kong copy. Dolly's Manicure Set. The razor is lavender, the Gem Jr has been removed, the blade box is a sketchy looking copy and the soap is plastic (in the Merry sets, the soap is real). And I forgot this, view of the Gem Jr name on the razor.

Terrific photos! Those are great. Thnx for posting them.
Interesting that the one set used real soap also. What dates are the oldest you think? As far as the 1940's or did they start in the 50's?

All they needed to make was a toy Streamline or Damaskeene! Cool photos!
