Arrived today ... Ever Ready 581 20x55 knot with a 60mm handle - boar bristle, I think. Dry, smelly and losing hair. After a choppy wash, brutal loading and vigorous lathering, I think all the hair it's going to lose is lost ... it's got a bit more life and feels a little nicer now. It's tall, firm and bowl lathers a beauty! With use, it's going to be okay I think. Otherwise, a 20mm synthetic knot will do it proud. Further picture alongside my Omega 80097:

I love the look of that handle. Hope it last you a long time. I have some vintage boars that are still going very strong.

Very nice brush, I would put a synthetic in there.

... another great steal from your side of the pond Thanks for the compliment. It is a little brittle but after a few aggressive loading and vigorous lathers, it's really coming through. I massaged some ASB into it last night and this morning it feels a world of difference better - I'll give it another couple of lather builds before putting it into action for real. If it really doesn't play out, I'll get a high loft synthetic to drop in.

That design of handle has got to be one of the best ever. Enjoy.

Brittle bristles, hair loss, snapping ... I gave it a really good massage with aftershave balm and several aggressive test lathers. I've used it once, but it really had not come up to scratch and just felt like a dank old brush. So, I popped out the knot ... The top and bottom parts of the handle came apart after resting it on a radiator for an hour, or so, the wooden bottom really drying out and shrinking. I cut off most of the hair really short with a kitchen knife and then gently hammered an awl through the middle, which cracked the resin holding the hair together. Done several times in strategic placed and one final tap with a large punch and it all came out cleanly. Ready for a PurTech knot coming from China ... Fingers crossed! When the knot arrives, I'll picture the finished result.

... et voila! I'm not 100% happy with it, but I learned a lot. The knot was indeed 19mm, but on the fat side of 19mm. The hole is 19mm. I tried knocking it in from the top but it wouldn't go the whole way so I tried pushing it through from the bottom, but that was futile and knackered some of the hair. Heating up the top, lots of soap and the knot went in from the top quite happily ... until it cooled and a little, tiny, imperceptible, but I know it's there ... crack appeared. You can't see it, can you? I can. Grrrr Still, that will pass and I'm sure I'll enjoy this brush - it's a Lather King! Seriously thick lather that I could form peaks with!

One sanding tube later ... Bored out to 21mm (from 19mm), crack removed and the knot set down to 48mm (was 60mm) I think it looks much more balanced against the handle. Me? 100% happy now

Cheers! Second attempt after some contemplation and it's just right now ...
This is my first re-knot and I'm very pleased with the result. Once the glue has properly dried, I'll give it an outing.
