Here's a couple of recent acquisitions from the Ever Ready stable: a 300N and 400BN.
The N stands for Nylon - first generation, literally fishing wire with a split end and remarkably effective actually!
Bowl lathered, it blows up a lather in no time, perfectly acceptable and applying to face is much akin to using a boar brush. Face lathered is not fun, though.
BN stands for Badger Nylon, a mix of the two materials and formed into the portmanteau 'Badgerlon' which is proudly stamped on the brush.
Again, bowl lathered is built up a lather well. I don't think I'd say the badger added anything to experience and that's coming from a regular synthetic user - flipped around, I'm think it would be fair to say that the nylon did not detract as water retention was still good and actually, the nylon accounted for maybe 10% of the fibres. I speak in the past tense since it's been given a close-crop haircut. I didn't face lather because I really don't get on with badger.
My plan was always to re-knot the 400BN and leave the 300N as the original. Modern synthetic, be it Silvertip Fibre, PurTech or Silvertex, is very much in the spirit of 'Badgerlon' which in its day retained badger because the technology of nylon was nowhere close; today, it is and so I intended to drop a modern synthetic into the 400BN.
... but things happen and I ended up drilling out the 300N, dropping a PurTech into that, so I now have to go one better for the 'Badgerlon' and so I decided on the best: Muhle Silvertip Fibre, which I'm now waiting on shaving.ie to return from holiday and post to me
So, the brushes ...
... the knot something like 20x50 (exposed).
... replaced with a PurTech 19x65 set in and now measurable as 20x50 (exposed).
... so, just waiting on a Muhle Silvertip Fibre for the 'Badgerlon'.
