A recent lot purchase included the set seen below. At first glance it appears to be an Imperial De Luxe set, circa 1927. It would, except that the razor is a 1912 - a low profile 1912 at that, with a short art deco style handle, instead of the 1924 usually found in this set. It doesn't appear to be a mismatched set - the razor says "Ever-Ready Made in USA" on the base plate. There is nothing at all on the back of the razor head. Note the Ever-Ready sticker, firmly in place on the inside of the case cover. It gets even more weird. The outside of the case has the textured pattern expected on an Imperial De Luxe set, but . . . GEM??? Can anyone shed any light on this? Paul? --Bob

I have seen a number of these, Ever Ready as well ... yes, with the 1912 head. I need to check against my Imperial Deluxe but I think the cushion that the comb is sitting on is a different shape on these sets than the 1924 and so we can clearly see that this is an intentional set.
I have seen GEM sets and Ever Ready Sets.
I have also seen reference to the Ever Ready GEM razor! "Ever Ready GEM razor" in literature. I think it's a British thing. Remember the Ever Ready headed pushbutton with GEM on the handle? I think I have one coming soon, with all the booklets and so on ... remember also my red cardboard set with Ever Ready around the sleeve and GEM on the top?
I think in the British market, the two brands became interchangeable ... but the evidence, if you like, is only just becoming noticed. I need to check a number of adverts.

I knew that there was some co-mingling of the brands with the British versions, but this set is definitely American. I also realized that I erred in calling this a low profile head. The calipers reveal that it is exactly the same size as the Improved Ever-Ready head - same weight, too. Perhaps it was the lack of markings of any sort on the back. The case is most definitely made for a 1912 head. I tried pedestal and stamped versions of 1924 heads, and could not fit either in a way that would allow the case to properly close. @ Petrvs: +1 --Bob

Does it shave as great as the Improved Ever Ready?

A while ago I received a lot of 3 identical ER 1912, with no case whatsoever. They're exactly this same razor: head of the same size & weight of regular 1912, no marking on the back and stamped "Ever-Ready Made in USA" on the baseplate. Curiously, the handle is different: instead of the chain link, all 3 have the ridged/slashed short handle as I've seen in some STAR models. Could it be that they were originally part of a similar set?

Okay, so US made. Blank backed Ever Ready are not uncommon, but a GEM case with an Ever Ready shield inside and an Ever Ready razor. Curious. Curious indeed! These cases have been made for 1912s, as per yours and as per the GEM picture above. The Imperial Deluxe with a 1924 in simply does not fit a 1912, not even a squat head. ... a lovely oddity

Does it shave as great as the Improved Ever Ready? I haven't yet shaved with it, but I imagine that it would. The head is the same in every dimension as the Improved Ever-Ready - the only difference is the lack of markings on the back. --Bob
