I remember a period in my life when I used a Schick Injector razor. Probably well over 40 years ago. Of course, in those days it was a squirt of Barbasol or Foamy and then one and done. Who ever heard of multiple passes?
Well, in my new exploration of SE shaving I picked up a pristine J1 and bought some China produced stainless blades. Used the razor for the first time this morning. Did my normal 2 1/2 passes. I got a comfortable and acceptable shave but not a great shave. As you all have pointed out, the J1 is a mild shaver. I certainly concur. I'll work on blade angle, length of stroke, etc. I think I can coax a good shave out of it with a bit more work. It will be fun to try.

The j1 has more blade exposure than the I1 but I always found it to be more difficult to get the right angle. It can be done and will shave as good as the I1 once you get it. It isn't very difficult, it is just that with the I1 the angle is automatic.

I think I have it figured out. The last two shaves with the J1 have been very good. DFS in 2 1/2 passes. I installed a second blade and it has made all the difference. When I got the razor there was no blade in it. I remember reading that one should sacrifice a blade and load a second one to insure proper seating. Being basically tight, I didn't do that. I don't know if the first blade was properly seated or not. It looked OK to me, but the shaves were not very good. Anyway, things are going well now. I recently won an auction for a very nice G1. I'm looking forward to comparing the shaves with the two razors.

When loading a blade into an injector razor with no blade in it the blade often makes contact with the first blade stop, dulling the edge.
I have an old injector (the blade dispenser, not the razor) that I keep loaded with a few used blades, just for this purpose.

Exactly. I have wiped the used blades lightly with mineral oil, and sometimes I will feed 2 or 3 of the used blades through the razor to push any accumulated crud out of the blade channel and leave behind a bit of the oil to smooth the blade movement. Then I load a new blade and return the used blade(s) to the injector - and shave away. --Bob
