The thing with the R41 is, it's probably the most aggressive double edge razor folks today are going to use. Wardonia made really good razors for proper men, huge blade gap and the blades were quite rigid, but today they can only be used with modern blades which have to be customised with a hole punch as the pegs on the head and baseplate do not quite line up with today's razors. So, the R41 remains king of the DEs and has a reputation to boot ... Come over to SE shaving and quite probably even an American made 1912 would laugh in the face of an R41. The Micromatic is a funny beast in that modern SE blades are not quite thick enough in the spine to get the original angle just right. Add half of a modern spine underneath a modern spine in a Micromatic and it's a transformed razor - it's aggressive AND smooth. I like the Micromatic, but it's the earlier ones without the nubs on the baseplate. To me, that about brings it up to a mid-30s British 1912 in terms of closeness and smoothness of shave. I read somewhere that there's no need to shim in a Micromatic. On Monday I'll load the Clog-Prof with a half shim. Would you say that using a 1912, 1914 or 1924 without a shim would make them more aggressive? I used a USA 1912 today without a shim and my face was nice and smooth, a BBS shave for sure. I'll have to try my British 1912 without a shim also.

BTW. it is a lot easier to just use an injector blade as a shim than try to make a half shim from a GEM spine.

That's a super idea!

A piece of plastic like a cut strip of an old credit card would also work.

A little work with the magnifying glass reveals that if you are using a Micromatic with the "bumps" (which would be later OC's and all Clog-Prufs and Bullet Tips) the shim is irrelevant.
The blade is supported by the bumps, which contact the side of the blade just ahead of the spine.
Something just occurred to me. The Gem double edge blades had no spine at all, of course. These blades were introduced in 1932, per Waits. I'll bet the bumps were added in order to accommodate the double edge blades.

I got two great shaves with two different 1912's the past two days without any shims. I think I will run without the shims for a while. I plan on using a British 1912 for Sunday and Tue-Fri. The Clog-Pruf will be used Monday. Joe

Great shave from the Clog-Pruf today.
If I had to use this or the OCMM for the rest of my days, I wouldn't mind.
No DE ever shaved this close for me.

I'll revive this thread. It's Monday and I just had my first Micromatic shave. I recently bought a trio of razors. A 1914, a HR-14A Star and a MMOC. The Micromatic is in amazing shape. After a quick clean it looks brand new. No plating loss, no scratches, shiny, shiny. I did a bit of reading up before using it and everyone says the MMOC is an aggressive beast. Use with care. It might slice you up. Yadda yadda... Blah blah... Who makes up this nonsense? It's a wonderful shaver! Keep the head as close to flat on the face as possible, use no pressure and it's marvellous. My face is as smooth as it can be. Not a single nick. The alum block had not much to complain about either. Maybe I cheated a bit by using a GEM stainless blade that already had four shaves under its belt and was at its prime. On top of that - how wonderful is the TTO mechanism? This little machine must have been the height of sophistication when it hit the market. It still is.

I do not find the MMOC to be an aggressive razor at all. Like you said: "Who makes up this nonsense?"

I think it's only seen as aggressive but the guys who don't use it flat
I do find the nubless version to be more aggressive though.
