Paul, my one Vie-Long (posted above) isn't floppy either. :-) I think that mine is as broken in as it'll ever get. That took quite awhile, OK, even longer than quite awhile*. I almost threw the towel in and gave up. I bought it used and I suspect that's what the previous owner did. But today it's quite usable. If my face is ever red from the sun I doubt that I'd want to use it however.
I would never claim that's it has ""most favored brush" status, but when it comes up in the rotation I know that it'll perform admirably.
*I wish I had kept records of when various brushes came into my possession. Surely I've had the Vie-Long for a few years now.
Petrus, if my one horse brush is any indicator, horse is probably the brush with the absolutely longest break in time. I just checked the brush because I was unsure if the tips had split or another mechanism was at work. Yes, they've split. Not as much as a Boar, but they are split. If someone needs instant gratification horse isn't the brush for that person.

My American Style Vie-Long arrived today and I have to say, after a couple of vigorous test lathers I am very happy with it. Like Petrvs, I find it in no way floppy (like the other Vie-Long horses I've tried), it doesn't tangle up and I think I am going to be very happy with it ... It's not as soft as a boar ... yet. From memory, these horses can take a little breaking in. Blonde boar seems to just be just right, soft and all, from the outset. Sounds like a winner!!

I have eight horse brushes and use them all regularly. Care should be taken not to splay horse brushes. The act of splaying while you apply lather will cause tangles to form, I use paintbrush strokes and the softness of the tips covers whiskers very well. I have no problems with my stable of horses. They get better over time, not as a marked change as boar. I think of horse as a combo brush----soft a badger with the scritch of a good boar. Vie Long is my favorite manufacturer of horse brushes.

I must do something right. I have never had one tangle before. I have two one that is a longer knot and one that is more like my VDH boar. They both work great.

I have several vintage horse brushes and find the dark old ones have good backbone/stiffness but don't hold water too great. I enjoy them with a face lather but not for creams/bowls as I find it takes a lot of work to lather up. I have yet to try a synthetic, but it sounds like I should really give one a go soon.

I have one horse brush - Vie Long 13755. It is small (knotom 21mm, loft 50mm) but realy good brush. It give me a different feel and make a different leather than my favorite RR Plissoft brush.

Hope this vie-long is still treating you good, Paul...I remember EVERY Turkish barber swore by them...and their brushes, some of them with pretty big lofts, never got too floopy and those cats used those brushes non-stop. Most Turkish men don't shave at home but get barber shaves once or twice a week. So those horse-hair brushes took a licking and kept on scrichin...Exfoliating monsters...lol! Felt great!

Thanks for asking ... as it happens, I've pulled the knot and fitted a synthetic as I just didn't get on with it.

guess I'll do the same, Paul. May I ask which knot size did you use? I never measured it, but the original one seems pretty small, something like 21mm
