Very nice write up riverrun. Thank you for putting the time and effort into it. The only thing I do not follow is the "need" for a shim in a 1912. I get outstanding shaves and have never used a shim. I also agree with your conclusion. For the price there is no real improvement over vintage.

Without a shim I need to lift the head a tiny bit off the face to get to the correct angle, with a shim I keep the head flat on my face. I prefer that, but you can get a great shave without. Secondly, a shim reduces the 'buttering toast' sound of the razor, which as I mentioned above is just blade chatter. I really want a rubbery (3D printed?) sleeve for the spine of a GEM blade, to really shut the blade up. Also, my experience with 1912s is limited to British made ones. Your 1912s may vary. Y1MV?

I am not a blade chatter type either. I do not think the blade flexes that much. Specially with a SE blade. However I am a firm believer that you should use your razors the best way to get your shave. Keep up the great shaves!!!

How about using a rubber band to help with the chatter.

I might try some rubber band once I'm finished with that Twin blade in the H1 (19 shaves so far ) Or some earplugs

Rubber bands seem to be approx. 1mm thick, maybe shorter ones get thinner as you stretch them. Hours of fun and experiments when I find the time and a collection of rubber bands. For people living in one of the two countries in the world that haven't gone metric by now: That's 1.5 inches long and about 1/4 of one of those inch things wide.

I don't know why.

Except that Tom wrongly believes the Earth has a radius of 3,959 miles, whereas I know that it's 6,371 kilometres. Some extreme weirdos even think that the spelling 'kilometers' is acceptable, but they are heretics - worse than non-shimmers. We'll never agree.
