I've had a unique little razor for about a year now and never put a whole lot of thought into it until recently, but here's the question. To share here I want to be sure it fits into the SE only category. It does have one single edge, one that is continuous for 360 degrees. What do you think, wanna see more?

Here's the razor, a Collins Rotary Razor. It has a round blade, sadly not sharp enough to use. There's a dial under the blade to adjust blade exposure, and to aid in replacement of blades. Here it is all the way "closed". And all the way "open". A pic of the bottom shows the first patent date of 1915, and that it's plated in silver. The handle is two pieces, the bottom is a dial that can be twisted to wind a gear mechanism that spins the blade. In the first shot you can see a little button that looks like Neil Armstrong's foot print on the moon. It moves ever so slightly up or down to allow the blade to spin, or to stop it. The bottom comes off and on the inside, at some point in time, someone scratched either "IX" or "XI" in the unpolished surface. Now here's where it's even more interesting, well to me at least. According to patent documents, there were improvements made to the original patent. They were submitted by Cap Bertrand Collins who listed residence in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Other patents list other addresses, but most of them make some sort of reference to South Dakota. Sioux Falls is a little under 400 miles from me, no small distance, but it is the most populated city in SD, and I'm near the second most populated city, and also where I found this razor. Certainly two places a South Dakota business man would be likely to have contacts. In my own little world, the "IX" was carved in the handle to indicate it was the 9th razor of it's kind, and perhaps given away by Mr. Collins himself. OK, ok, so that's an unlikely scenario, but it's still a very interesting razor. I have the instructions as well, I'll get those uploaded if you guys would like to have a look.

It sounds like a SE razor to me. It also sounds incredibly interesting!
Edit: I just checked Waits... it's in there; page C15 is where Collins starts.
FWIW, I can't imagine having the blade turning while I'm drawing it against my skin. It almost seems like it'd spiral slice my face like a ham.

Wonderful post!!! These Collins razors are pretty intriguing You do get a sense that they would be quite the dance to shave with. With the radio set playing Nash the Slash. That blade is Single Edge all the way baby!!! Truly the most complete single edge around!! It is a powered rotary razor of which there don't appear to be many that would qualify as using a Single Edge replaceable blade (can't think of one right now!). That said, I have a few mechanically powered shavers - the Stahley is an example, a couple of other old wind ups that I have seen on eBay. Those razors are owered mechanically yes, but certainly accepted as a DE razor. So adopting the Collins as an SE might be the right thing to do here at TOST2!! I have seen a few of these kicking around from time to time -not too often mind you - this one is terrific with the box. I have always wondered if these weren't popular with the ladies? It presents as a gentleman's razor however - just wondering is all. Nice to see some pics posted - thnx!!!!

I wonder what the box means by "Forces you to shave with a diagonal stroke?" .

I wonder what the box means by "Forces you to shave with a diagonal stroke?" . It isn't real clear from the graphics what you're supposed to do with this razor. Can you try it enough to tell how it might work MrGuy??

Interesting razor. Couldn't call it a single edge. I think it' onf it's own as far as classification goes. In theory it has an infinite number of egdes. I'm not quite sure how it works either.

I've been trying to find a way to sharpen it up, but nothing sounds very good so far.

That is pretty bizarre actually. Thanks for posting MrGuy, that is a lot of pics to load up!! I was looking for the suggestion of how it shaves as it twirls, but the clearest part is: simply guide it over your face and let it shave YOU!!I don't get it entirely!! The blade spins?? Then it must be easy to get cut?? They suggest turning it off the first time under your nose. They must be expecting a few sliced nose bits!! Fascinating item!! New from Collins!! The INFINITY EDGE!!!! And, if wasn't really silly, I would say that that guy's shaving stand and mirror with shaving stick are giving me dreamy thoughts!!!

A very interesting design for sure. I'm gusessing there's a reason we don't see many razors today that are based on the circular saw.

Yes, the blade spins, and I agree that it has to be interesting shaving not getting cut with a circular saw on your face. (Great visual, Tom!) I'd still love to find a way to sharpen the blade and see what happens. I should have some free time on Tuesday, I'll post a quick video showing how it woks, well how everything but the actual shave works.
