Today I visited another local tobacconist in the same nearby town as the first shop I patronized. I bought cigars for a friend at this shop a few years ago, but it was more of a cigarette shop with a few cigars (and some shaving items, too).
The shop was since sold, and the new owner is intent on running a serious tobacco shop (more pipes and cigars, no cigarettes or shaving gear).
I was greeted by a younger man with a beard, who happily directed me to the humidor when I enquired about pipe tobacco. Amidst a wide variety of cigars, they had four dozen (or more) jars of pipe tobacco, so customers can choose blends that suit their noses. They also have straight Latakia, Virginia, and Perique varieties (Perique seems mysterious and intriguing) so I now have a baseline for each of those varieties.
Their strongest-smelling blend is called "Bayou", which I found both pleasant and complex. It is also their most expensive option, perhaps in part because it is blended locally. I smoke infrequently, so I bit the bullet.
I filled my pipe as soon as I arrived home, and it is exactly what I hoped it would be--smoky, spicy, and slightly sweet. An enjoyable, relaxing experience.
This is also the first crumble cake I've tried, and I noticed it is drier than the black Cavendish. I packed the Bayou with the same three-step method, yet I had to relight only a couple of times.

Perique is made near here. And only near here. It is stout by itself but a good smoke. The drier sruff is better to me. I smoke a cheaper black cavendish at times that they add stuff to so it stays wetter longer. Not as good as the C and D blends. C&D has bayou morning and bayou nights. Both good. I picked up some Star of the East the other day. Heavy on the latakia. It is a very good blend.

One or more of those C&D tobaccos will certainly be part of my order when I get around to ordering.
I assumed when I read the "Bayou" label it would contain Perique, but with no frame of reference, I could only confirm the campfire aroma of Latakia I had read about. Then I inhaled from the Perique jar and confirmed my assumption. Amazing stuff you folks produce there.

Very stout but smooth. I find it is great mixed with most anything too.
