This is Saturday, and I don't have to go to work right away. That means I can write about my shave with the long handled Type J razor. View AttachmentMaybe it is my imagination, but this one seemed even more mild than the first two. Beginning with my first "with the grain" pass, I seriously thought that there wasn't a blade in it. But, ironically, something left a 1/4" scratch on my face. Might have been the end of the blade not centered within the razor when it was loaded. No blood, just a little red scratch. After checking the razor, I found that yes, there was a blade there. I made sure it was centered by nudging the end of the blade a wee bit. The rest of the shave continued in grand fashion. Second pass was against the grain. Another smooth, clean, close shave in the books. Except for that odd scratch, no nicks, no fouls, no irritation. I did notice the handle on this one was round, oval to be more precise. And it was long. I glanced in the mirror during the shave and found that the last inch of handle was sticking out in mid air, neither getting in the way, nor aiding the hand to grip the razor. Both of these differences made no positive or negative impression on me. It was just different. Finished off with witch hazel, then Nivea balm with a drop or two of Skin Bracer "Wild Moss". What a way to start a Saturday! Tomorrow, the Type L! After getting a few scratches...and a fair nick from a lather catcher... I have a habit of checking for blade edges after loading things. I make a joke about being sure I have my reading glasses on. Sounds like your doing great!! No need to rush by the way. Play with them for awhile!!

It's day 4 of the Schick injector try outs. This morning's razor is the Type L. Same prep routine as before, new personna blade, same Wickham 1912 Irish Fern soap, same synthetic brush. The soap and brush were picked because they provided consistent lather. No presoaking of the brush, no finicky lathering technique for the soap. The blades? Well, those are the only blades I have right now. On to the razor... This is how I expected a razor to shave. Straight away, there was no doubt that there was a blade there. There was good blade feel and audible feedback. The second pass against the grain went really well, and there was a tiny bit of "warning sign" from my neck that told me not to press so hard. Good feedback to have, in my opinion. The squarish handle gave me more feeling of control than the oval handle handle. Again, the length didn't make any difference, good or bad. Final results were excellent, as usual for this 4 piece tryout. Finishing touches were Thayers witch hazel, and Stirling post shave balm. I will come back later and sum up the first 4 shaves. It's been fun so far.

OK, I'm back. I hesitate to judge a razor on one shave. The second and third shave might be different. The blades, even new blades, might be different in each razor. But, having said that, I will hypocritically give my thoughts so far :-):
Smoothness: The G type was tied with the J type for being the smoothest. Both scored a 9/10 for smoothest. The I type was just a little behind with a score of 8.5/10 for smoothness. The L type was last with a score of 7/10. There was a definite blade feel and a sense of "cutting down the trees" that the first three did not have.
Shave quality: All were the same result. All mishaps were operator error. All scored 10/10.
Maneuverability: As you might expect, they all have similar head shapes and this was a 4-way tie. No problem getting under the nose or behind the jaw bone. 10/10.
Now the following is REALLY just personal preference... Handle preference: None were offensive, but the oval handle on the J model just didn't feel as nice as the other three handles that had flat surfaces. Favorite handle shapes and sizes are ranked with in this order, best to good - G, I, L, J.
Pride of ownership/pride of usage: The G type is my favorite to look at and use. The L reminds me of my beginning shaving days (mid-1970's). The I is pretty cool looking and looks good in the mirror. The J, well, it's not attractive to me, but is a better shaver than it looks.
I am going to shave a few more times with some of these 4 razors. I am not afraid to come back and say, "I changed my mind". If I do, I will let you know.
Thanks for reading, Carl

For this week, I have been doing side by side tests. One razor on my left side, another razor on my right. Just a few additional thoughts.
The most user-friendly razor is the "L" type. I don't know why, but the razor "gives me a feeling" if I am putting a bit too much pressure on the skin so I can back off before it actually cuts or irritates me.
That J type is noticeably milder than all others. I wonder if it is designed that way, or just a result of manufacturing variables.
The most impressively efficient is the G type. Such a fine specimen.
Now I have to decide if I want to buy one of each, or just one at a time. Decisions decisions.
Thanks again to Fuzzy (wchnu) for making this possible.

The good thing is you can pick them up at good prices. Might as well grab you some. Lol

A certain "shave shop" ETSY vendor has a turquiose and a dark blue one available. But one at a time for me. I'm in no rush.
In order to test my theory that the razors have variations within the same product line, I need a decent sample size to give meaningful conclusions, right? That's my story, and I'm sticking' to it. Give me about a year.
I gave the four razors a final scrubbing with a soft toothbrush and scrubbing bubbles. I will try to box them up tomorrow for the return trip home.
Thanks again.
