I know this has been talked about before....Hell, I've posted about it before....But I wanted to open a dialogue about it that's easy to find.
When we look at the Schick Timelne ( www.safetyrazors.net/schick/schicktech.htm ) it appears, at first glance, that we are looking at the running development of Schick's Safety razor.
BUT, check it out...
The Schick Simplified Automatic Repeater (C type) hit the shelves in 1932.... Which means.....From 1935 to 1941 when Commercial Manufacture of Schick razors stopped because of WWII, Schick was makng, marketing and selling their C type repeaters and their E2 Injector razors at he sametime. One was not thought of as an improvment or more modern design. They were just different for personal choice.
Also, from Christmas 1940 til a few months into 1941, Schick also offered the F type along with the C type repeaters and the E2 razors all concurrently.
Providing quite the selection. The repeater for someone traveling and wanting to carry their blade supply in the razor. The E2 for use at home...and the F type was their 1940 Christmas Special, a real beauty, whose time was cut short by the signs of the coming World War.
Of course when the War hit Schick only produced E types to fill Military contracts. After Commercial production resumed after the end of the War, Schick was sold to Eversharp and only the E type conversion to the G type was manufactured. I'm afraid both the Repeaters and the F types would have been too costly to manufacture along wih converting to the G type at the same time. Plus, it looks to me that cuttng costs was the sign of the day.Competition with Gillette ( name mentioned strictly for historical reference) was growing more fierce, with so many Army soldiers returning with their Unmentionable razors...that cost very little to make compared to a repeater...
What do you guys think? Any thoughts on it?
Now here's he fun part...What if you had gone down to the drug store in 1941 and they had Schick C3s, F types and E2s that open, all available at the sametime....How would you have responded to that?!!
Do you think if they had started producing the repeaters again after the War along with the G types....would it have worked ? Or would it have caused them to go bankrupt? Would you and the men in your family paid the extra change for a repeater or an F type at that time?
What other guestions does this scenario bring up?
