I am quite pleased to have landed a 1900 patent Gem Cutlery safety razor. This patent 657010 was filed in 1899 and finalized in 1900. It is the first razor project in the wonderful business marriage of August Scheuber, Mary and Simon Zinn, and the razor powerhouse of GEM Cutlery championed by Jeremiah Reichard - the spin off engineer from Kampfe. The Zinns and Reichard were already teamed for the Zinn automatic razor, but made a strategic move by including Scheuber (involved with numerous important safety razors and the designer of the 1912) in the back rooms. Reichard and Scheuber ended up creating ER in 1905 and Scheuber, the Zinns and others create ASR. This razor design has some fine parentage indeed! This GEM was likely made for only a limited run in 1900/1901 as the same team made a frame design that changed the frame from having one pair of access hinges in the front, to a two pair version within the year.

Now that is a really nice LC!
Will it hold a spined blade for shaving?

Now that is a really nice LC! Will it hold a spined blade for shaving? No, this razor will not hold a modern or modified modern blade. There were no blade stops on the early wedge frames as the wedge itself would only go so far, negating the need for stops. The spine back wafer blades simply slide right through. The spine backs were still about 5 to 6 years away at this point. Resharpened wedge blades can do a pretty reasonable job of a shave though. A bit tuggy, but what ya gonna do?
