I recently watched a YouTube video with a rolls razor. The guy said the handle has a knob that twists a ball in the hook up and down. This clamps down the blade. On mine it is either locked up or doesn't have a twist knob. The ball seems to be spring loaded and I am able to slide the blade in sideways. Anybody have any idea if all rolls handles are supposed to have a twisting knob?

I would think if it had a twist knob the ball would be attached to some type of thread. So if that's the case I would think the ball wouldn't feel kinda springy.

They are most often rusted shut. Have a look at the vid. If your handle is like mine you will need to wrap the handle in a towel on either side, put pliers to both sides (the towel protects the knurl) and twist open. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

The only other kind is the telescoping one. It looks different than mine.

I think the telescopic handle comes with the Imperial 1, I have one of those and you just slide from the side, not a good mechanism on mine and I think I read it certainly isn't the one to get. I accidentely aquired an Imperial 2 some time ago in a lot I bought. Again it just seems to slide from the side,I just had another look, works much better and after ignoring it for months I have used it for my last 3 shaves with good results. I think the Viscount is the one to get, niether of mine are in nearly as good condition as the one in the video above, very nice @vintagelife

Regarding the style you used in your video, I've found 2 types put out by Rolls. One type unscrews to 2 separate pieces, with the tension rod inserted into the bottom piece. Loosening the bottom piece allows the blade to easily slide in to the handle. The other type seems to be cast as one piece, does not unscrew at all (found that out the hard way...). The blade slides in the handle against the tension rod, mars the blade finish over time. I much prefer the style the unscrews to 2 pieces. Easier to use and doesn't scratch the blade.

Yeah, the best one is the screw apart one. I have a broken telescopic one that I need to refurbish.

Bad news mine definitely seems to be the one piece that you slide the blade in I tried to free up the handle pieces and marred up the grip

You can find a rolls in poor shape for under $10 on ebay and scavenge the handle. I have many rolls carcasses at home from all my scavenging.

The non twist ones are a bit of a pain at first but after some practice it becomes easier. I’ll still take the twist one any day of the week 😂
