In the past, I have had a lot of trouble getting a good shave from an SE. Once in awhile everything worked well but then the next shave would sorta suck. Overall the SE experience was not working for me.
So this week I have been using SE's only and guess what?? I got great shaves! Well, the Featherweight wasn't my favorite but still did ok.
I had been thinking about getting rid of my SE's but not any more. This week just opened up another avenue for enjoyable shaving. And that's what we're after if I'm not mistaken.
So, anyway, if your experience isn't what you want....try again and you might be surprised. I was and I like it

Poppi, that's good to read. Experience and consistency makes a huge difference.

Definitely experience changes everything. I used to write down what I used for shaves trying to track what I used when I got a bad shave and blame what I used. I almost never get bad shaves now great consistent lather using my spray bottle system and distilled water. As well as multiple lathering techniques. Just practice makes perfect I can pretty much pick up any new razor and use it no issue first time. Alot of people are afraid of the rolls razor it looks mean and you can't get more aggressive than open blade. My first shave didn't have a single bleeder and no irritation. Your motor skills just get better plus you know when to stop. I used to think some razors didn't cut enough on my neck. Then I figured out if I choked up a little closer to the blade and add no pressure most razors would cut a bit closer on the neck.

I will say though I have noticed some blades feel rougher and give me more bleeders even when new.

Getting a bit off topic but has anyone here used a soap with the clay in it. A few local soapmakers make shave soap with clay. These soaps make rough blades feel more smooth with less bleeders. I'd say due to the microscopic clay particles creating a physical barrier between blade and skin in addition to lubricating.

The question was asked, "What changed"? In truth, I don't know. Prior to last week I hadn't used an SE for some time cuz the shaves I had been getting were uncomfortable and less than effective. Just thought I should try again. I did and it worked out great. Maybe it was the Williams SS, maybe magic or the shave guru blessing me. Like I said I just don't know but I'm glad I tried again and will be using them more for sure.

I've used soaps with bentonite clay and I think it's a slickness agent if I'm not mistaken. Soaps with clay have worked well for me.

I've used soaps with bentonite clay and I think it's a slickness agent if I'm not mistaken. Soaps with clay have worked well for me. There are different clays that are used but they are all of volcanic origin from 100's of million of years ago, deposits of weathered volcanic ash that has crystalized into sheet like structures like a deck of cards. They can hold many times their own weight in water in between these structures. This all gives the wet clays a slick lubricating quality.
