other than a hot wet towel, how else can one soften facial hair? i only ask because in march of 2000 i bought the unmentionable (fuzzy was here)system razor but didnt shave while taking a shower and instead decided to shave about 30 minutes after showering. the problem that i encountered was when shaving against the grain! my facial hair was tough and i mean tough! it felt hard like nails for some reason!!!!!!! thats why im asking what other than a hot wet towel can be put on tough facial hair? ? gillette exfoliation cream/gel to soften hair??? someone told me to put a hot towel for like 3 minutes and this will soften the hairs but by how much? will a hot towel for 3 minutes really soften my facial hair that much that i can shave against the grain with no irritation? when shaving against the hair like 30 minutes after showering my whiskers feel like tough galvanized steel!!!! what am i doing wrong here? ? since what year has this forum been online? 1999 or 2000? can any of u guys please help me out here??? rsvp. thank you.

I do not buy into the whole hot towel prep thing. I wipe my face off with a warm rag and lather up. A sharp blade with correct angle and pressure will shave great. Using a good brush and soap or cream helps too. I also do not use against the grain passes. I see no need in the added risk of irritation.

I also do not use against the grain passes. I see no need in the added risk of irritation. that is the key for me as well. I shave every day, but my skin simply doesn't tolerate that I do atg passes every day. I can do it from time to time, like once a week, but definitely not everyday. As soon as I realized it, and started shaving only with the grain and across, my post shave feel improved sensibly.

I use a hot towel every time. Don't know if it really makes a difference to my beard, but I sure like to do it cuz it feels good.
As for ATG, I do it cuz if I didn't I might as well not shave. It doesn't bother my face at all. Maybe cuz I've been doing it for so long. So can, some can't. Like all things shaving it's YMMV

I shower before i shave most times but i use no prep whatsoever. I use a preshave cube from paa sometimes but idk if it helps much. I gave up on the atg pass and my neck has thanked me ever since. Still achieve a dfs shave everytime.

Hot towel makes your skin hot. This is not a particularly good thing, the negatives override the hydration catalyst function. Hydration, cool-warm water is your friend. Lots of links on the other forum.

Don, to soften whiskers I just face lather. That both removes skin oils that are on the whiskers and preventing water from getting into them and it also is a vehicle that keeps the water at the whisker allowing it to soak in. Oh, and one more benefit... it just feels good to me. When I first got into this I would do the hot towel routine and I miss it not so much for prep but for the face feel of it. What works for you is what works for you though. If the hot towel does then keep doing it. Is what I do the "right way"? There is no one right way. It's what works for each individual.
