I have been testing out a few new razors as I am always in search of the “Holy Grail”, one razor to rule them all. I was giving a user grade Shovelhead a go, recently sourced on eBay and a candidate for a modern handle replacement. That’s when all hell broke loose and the biggest bloodbath I have encountered in a number of years. I would like to have written off this masacre to inexperience or poor technique but I suspected something more sinister. Upon further inspection, I noticed the safety bar on this example had a nice bow just to right of its mid point. Look closely at the photo and you can see that of which I speak. That bow allowed this ER 1924 to carve my skull and face in a particularly gruesome fashion (sorry, no pix of the crime scene). Any roads, do take caution when using a newly acquired vintage SE to actually inspect the safety bar for damage as your flesh will be glad you did!

Yes, you have to make sure when you buy a razor from eBay that the razor is in usable condition before you use it.
Most sellers are clueless about the razors they are selling. Don't take the sellers word for it when he/she claims that razor is in "good condition". Chances are they wouldn't know a razor in good condition from a broken one. If their description of the item is virtually non-existent that's enough for me to make me suspicious. Add to that pictures, some people shouldn't be allowed to operate a camera. Blurry pictures, back-lit pictures, pictures that look like they were taken in a dark closet with a single 40 watt light bulb overhead, low resolution pictures, pictures taken from 10 feet away, pictures where you can't even tell what color the razor is, or not enough pictures to clearly show all angles of the razor. I love it when the seller doesn't describe the razor but says "take a look at the pictures, they are part of the description" The pictures are usually so bad that if they are part of the description, then the razor must be junk too.
I haven't come across an SE with a bent safety bar before but I have come across some that have had broken blade stop hooks, damaged cap springs or Micromatics where the door sticks when turning the TTO to open.

Yes to all rayr says. The shovelhead was not a friendly razor for me until I mastered riding the cap. I think you could probably straighten that safety bar out.

I only have myself to blame as I well know to inspect before use. Unfortunately this was purchased a while back and really had almost forgotten about. I pulled it out recently and never bothered to take a look before I set about removed much of my scalp. Total BBS for the record, minus a few style points for excessive blood loss.

I think I will make a safety razor out of it yet. I took a jewelers hammer to her and seem to have it fairly true. I will certainly take great precautions on the next attempt!
