A friend recently sent me a Semogue 1250 problem brush. He had had enough of it and it was sent to me for the handle, to reknot it. He didn't want to see it again. I received it and decided to play with it first. The brush was far too large for me to use, so I cut about 3/8"-1/2" off of the tips and played with it that way for a time. I couldn't make the tips split, but the brush wasn't bad that way. (Thanks for the idea Tom!) Eventually I decided to keep my word and reknot it. Originally I planned to get to it next winter, but we had a monsoon come through and I had the time now. The knot is a TGN 20mm Finest Fan. It's set for 44-45mm loft, the same as my Rooney 3/1. It may be my first reknot, but it won't be my last. It was easy and I like the resulting look. After I'm sure the epoxy is fully cured I'll get it wet; that should happen tomorrow night or Friday. Edit: I recently bought a used Vulfix 2234 boar that has been shedding, but the price was right and the handle is good. When I bought the Badger knot I also got a boar knot. If the brush continues to shed I may reknot that sooner rather than later.

That is a wonderful looking brush SD! Very nice job for a first attempt. Appears like you got it figured out from square one!
Looking forward to hearing how you find the TGN finest knot. Are you planning an inaugural shave?

If I do a test lather Thurday evening (likely) the shave will happen on Friday morning.
I'll probably shave with it for a few days to break it in (badgers don't need much) then compare it to the Rooney. Completely different grades, but as I wrote, I've heard good things about TGN Finest.

Well, did ya try it out yet? I bought a couple of Golden Nib knots: pure badger and silver tip badger. Both really nice.
I'm a pure badger guy -- guess I'm just a simpleton....grin. Like Jim Beam Rye too.

No way!? You guys both like Jim Beam RYE? I'd never even heard of it but just bought some on a whim and man, it's my favorite whiskey now. I don't spend a ton on whiskey, but have spent up to $70 for a bottle -- and that's a lot for me -- and haven't tried any I liked better. And as I recall this was less than half of that.
Don't mean to high jack the thread. Maybe someone with some real power could move this? smile.

Count me in on the JB rye. Though I drink scotch or rum more often. JB rye is about $40 on sale here, which is when I grab it, otherwise makers mark, but both are nearer $50 when not on sale. The scotches and rums I drink are $32-37 on the other hand.
Oh yeah, I forgot, nice reknot job ;-)

I'm feeling a little bad here for continuing on with this hijack - but had to say - yeah that JB Rye is quite tasty. Us Canucks up here love Rye. Canadian Club by Seagrams being a decent one, but many yummy others. Gotta say - this yankee version rox!

Quite alright gents. Don't much care for Jim Beam though, or many bourbons at all.
John, I've used the brush a number of times. It has quit shedding and it's every bit as good as my Rooney 3/1 SuperSilvertip. Used it today as a matter of fact and I was thinking just that very thing as I was lathering up.
Would I do it again? You betcha, in a heartbeat, and twice.
The first time or 2 I used it I thought it might be too big, and I don't think I'd want to go any larger with a brush, but it's a really nice brush. What did the knot cost? $16, $18? I don't remember, but easily worth it.
