My screen name Mr Conklin is from an Old Time Radio Show called "Our Miss Brooks". It's a comedy centered around a couple teachers students and principal. Mr. Conklin is the principal. It also ran on TelevisionTV reused the radio episodes and was almost word for word the same as the radio show. The radio actors were the TV actors. Here is one of my favorite episodes For those of you that have never heard OTR, most of it is freely available to listen online or download. There are some great shows there. I didn't grow up when these were broadcast, but discovered it when one of our vehicles came with a satellite radio and one of the channels "Radio Classics" got me hooked. archive.org/details/oldtimeradioIf you liked the TV show Gunsmoke be sure to check out the radio show. William Conrad was the voice of Matt Dillion. I think the radio show episodes could at times be a little darker and rougher than the tv show. Lots of great detective shows too: Dragnet, Johnny Dollar, Richard Diamond, Sam Spade and more. Suspense and The Whistler are also great shows.

I remember listening to The Shadow when dad would drive us home from a day at Bear Mtn Park. For those who don't know, Lamont Cranston (The Shadow) was "cast" to be driving those roads. One nice thing about the old time radio shows, the characters always looked as I pictured them in my minds eye. What evil lurks in the hearts of men? Only the Shadow knows!

Not sure how I failed to mention the Shadow. Great series as well. Many of them were sponsored by household products so if you listen you may hear Palmolive ads for soap and shave soap, Injector razors, toothpastes, etc.

I really enjoy those old radio shows. I used to have a bunch of cassettes of them but they got lost during a move. The Shadow was great, I remember Blue Coal as one of the sponsors. Did you ever hear "Three Skeleton Key" with Vincent Price?

You can listen at the links I posted above, but there are also online radio stations that play these in a programmed format. These are a good way to see what you like then you can use the other links to play just that show or download for offline use. Radio Detectives audionoir.com/General Old Time Radio Shows (I think this station plays shows from today's date. In other words today we'd hear stuff that played on 4/24/xx radio.macinmind.com/Another Good One conyersradio.net/Bonus points to anyone knows what was originally set in Conyers, GA.

Thanks much, I will try them. If you haven't heard it listen to William Conrad in "Linengen vs the Ants". I can't remember but that might have been on Suspense.

I was thinking it was Escape, but could well have been Suspense. Here is another good one. Many of you have probably read "The Most Dangerous Game" short story. This is an excellent radio adaptation. www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/thriller/suspense/the-most-dangerous-game-1943-09-23

The new car no longer takes CDs/DVDs but a thumbdrive. So I bought a 128gb version. I have loaded a huge amount of CDs and videos onto it and have still only used a tiny fraction of it's capacity. Then the other day I got the wild idea that the audio didn't care if it played music or voice, so all of The Shadow (50+) is now available for long drives. It didn't put a dent in the chip. Sorry, but The Shadow is all that I remember from my childhood. The site has much more.
FWIW, videos only play video when the car isn't moving and is out of gear. Anything other and it's an apology and no video. Not that I would try to watch a video while driving anyway.
RKO has a site with more of The Shadow audio, but I can't figure out how to download them. They appear to play while on the site and no more.

I've been real busy with family stuff for the last week so I haven't had time to go to the sites and download (but I will). I've been trying to think of the one where a guy is driving across country and he keeps seeing the same hitch hiker.

That is an episode of The Twilight Zone. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitch-Hiker_(The_Twilight_Zone)

After checking the link I do remember the Twilight Zone episode; it was great. But I knew I heard it on the radio with a guy as the main character. If you follow the "The Hitch Hiker" link at the end of the paragraph it brings you to the 1941 Orson Welles radio show that the TV show was based on. Both TV and radio versions were well done and very spooky.

Another great suspense episode Agnes Moorhead was a great radio actress.
