Click on the photo. A neighbor called me today to remove a visitor. It was a black snake, about 5 feet long. I just grabbed it by the tail and took it down the street to the bamboo break. He seemed to like it there.

Eastern Racer (aka black racer or black runner)? I'm not much of a herpetologist, but we've got a few of those around here. They are typically VERY fast and hard to catch -- and they can get a little ornery when you do (although they are nonvenomous).
I'm a big fan of catch and release -- even the venomous snakes -- everything's got it's role to play. On a related note, I did get surprised by a water moccasin a few days ago. He startled me as I was picking blackberries around some water. Freaked me out so much that I started running sideways and tripped -- I looked up to see if he was about to come up on me while I was flailing around on the ground like a fool, and of course, he was just swimming away....probably heading to the nearest snake hang-out to tell this great story about some goofy two-legged creature he "brought down". I feel foolish on a number of levels, I was surprised by him, but I had seen a water moccasin in that area before, and I'm not a complete noob (I'm like one step above a noob) to the woods of Louisiana. Anyway, I do want to say that I did not drop the container of blackberries I was holding....I may be clumsy, but there was homemade pie in my future and I wasn't about to risk that!
Nice work, Jim!!!

Flintstone, that was a good encounter, it could have been much worse from the aggressive nature that I've heard of with cottonmouths.
You gents can have your venomous snakes. It's one of the benefits to living in Maine; no venomous snakes in the state unless they're in a zoo.
In my life I've only seen one, many decades ago and in a state hundreds of miles of my present AO. I was fishing from the shore in an area dotted with wells and I always thought that if I was a snake it would make great habitat. I laid my tackle box near a concrete well cover and went back to get it before moving on. There was a rattlesnake, must have been as big around as my waist and all of 25' long wrapped around it. I just happened to put my box in the only shaft of light near the well and the snake was sunning. When it realized it had company it very slowly left. OK, maybe it wasn't quite that big, but it was NOT an infant. It was pretty big.

I came across a rattlesnake while hiking once in NJ, luckily he had decided to rattle and let me (and other hikers know) that he was around and unhappy with us trespassers. So far I have been fortunate with my few encounters, and the herpetologists I know in Wildlife and Fisheries continue to assure me that snakes (venomous and non) are more flight than fight when it comes to humans....at least it's their preference, and when it comes to snakes it's mine as well.

I not too fond of snakes, to say the least..I have caught the non venomous types and relocated them before, when I lived in FL and I had cats that would catch them and play with them til they killed them. So I would intervene in the snakes brhalf.
BUT There was that time I was fishing in VA. With friends....I'm on shore....thrre was a water moccassin swimming towards me...
Then I noticed 3 more.....Swimming towards me....As they made the shore, they kept coming toward me!!!
Next thing I know, I was standing next to my car calling down to my friends that it was ti.e to go.....I don't remember, getting to the car....I just remember being there.
My friends all swore, that I absolutely just dissappered and reappeared a quarter mi.away, straight up the thickly wooded hill, at my car...lol! Kind of a "Beam me up Scotty" moment 😜😛👍
It's amazing what you can do under pressure...😁😂🤣
